📰 Google News API - Articles, Top Stories & Links (No Login)

Get Google News articles for any keyword, country and language: title, publisher domain, article link, snippet and publish time. Filter by time, sort by date.

Google offers no public Google News API. This Actor works as one: send keywords, get one structured row per article as JSON, CSV or Excel, or through the Apify API, ready for news monitoring, media monitoring and brand monitoring.

⚡ Why This Actor?

Atomic actor: enter keywords, get back the news articles Google News shows for them, one row per article, for any country and language. Each row has the headline, the publisher's domain, the article link, the snippet and the publish time as an ISO date. Filter by past hour, day, week, month or year, and sort by relevance or by date. Articles from Google's "Top stories" boxes are included too, marked with isTopStory: true and the publisher's name. No login, no browser, no proxies to set up. This actor returns headlines, snippets and links only. It does NOT return the full text of the articles.

🎯 Use Cases

  • Brand monitoring - see every headline that mentions your brand, product or CEO in the past day, sorted newest first
  • Competitive monitoring - follow the news coverage of competitors across several countries and languages in one run
  • Media monitoring - build a daily press clipping list with publisher domain, link and publish time ready for a spreadsheet or dashboard
  • Crisis monitoring - catch fast-moving stories with the past-hour filter and date sort
  • Market research - measure which publishers cover a topic and how often, per country
  • Journalism - collect source links on a story from many outlets at once, with their publish times
  • Academic research - gather dated, linked headline datasets on a topic for media and framing studies
  • News alerts on a schedule - run the same keywords every hour or every morning and send new headlines to Slack, email or Google Sheets, as a Google News alerts alternative with structured data
  • Developer news feed - pull Google News results into your own app or dashboard through the Apify API, without parsing RSS

After each keyword the run also writes one free KEYWORD_SUMMARY row (status: "info") with the number of articles written, Top-stories articles written, repeats skipped, rows that kept a Google News link, Google's rough result estimate and why the keyword stopped. Info and error rows are never charged.

📰 Top Stories vs Regular Results

Google News shows two kinds of results:

  • Regular results have a headline, snippet, publisher domain and publish time.
  • "Top stories" boxes group several articles under a title such as "News about Tesla". Each article in a box becomes its own row with isTopStory: true, the box title in topStoriesTitle and the publisher's name in source. These articles have no snippet.

Top-stories articles count toward maxArticlesPerKeyword like any other row. Turn them off with includeTopStories: false. Google usually shows Top-stories boxes only for searches without a time filter or date sort.

⏱️ Time Filters and Sort

  • timeRange keeps only articles published in the past hour, day, week, month or year.
  • sortBy: date returns the newest articles first. relevance uses Google's own order.
  • Both can be combined, for example past day plus newest first.

The keyword field is plain text. Search operators such as site: or when: are not supported; use the time filter and sort instead.

🔗 Article Links

For some searches Google gives its own links (google.com/goto?...) instead of the publisher's link. When Google redirects such a link straight to the publisher, the row gets the publisher's link (urlResolved: true). Otherwise the row keeps the Google News link (urlResolved: false), which opens the article in a browser. The publisher name (Top stories) and domain are filled in from the search result when Google gives them. The actor never opens the publisher's page.

🌍 Countries and Languages

Choose one of 213 countries and one of 129 languages from the dropdowns. Google News results depend on both: the same keyword can return different publishers and stories in the United States in English than in Germany in German.

🔁 Why Repeats Are Skipped

Google sometimes lists the same article twice in one search, especially in deep searches. Within each keyword, an article whose URL was already written is skipped, is not written again and is not charged. The count of skipped repeats is in the keyword's summary row.

💰 Pricing

Pay-per-event model on Apify:

EventPrice
Actor start$0.02 per run
Article$0.99 per 1,000 articles ($0.00099 per article row)

Info and error rows (summaries, invalid input, no results) are never charged.

See exact per-event pricing on the Actor's Apify page.

Free plan limit

Free Apify users get up to 5 results per run. Paying users are not affected and receive results normally.

This limit was set by the Actor developer, not by Apify. To remove it and receive unlimited results, upgrade to any paid Apify plan: https://apify.com/pricing

When a free plan run hits the cap, the Actor finishes successfully (status SUCCEEDED) and the run's status message explains what happened. No error is raised, so the first 5 results are fully usable as normal.

❓ FAQ

Q: Is this legal? A: This Actor wraps DataForSEO (https://dataforseo.com) endpoints that handle the underlying data collection of public Google News search results. Your downstream use of the data is your responsibility - see the full Terms of Service and the Actor-Specific Addendum (Part 4) for details. Headlines and snippets are suited to monitoring and research. Republishing full articles needs the publisher's permission.

Q: Do I need an account with a data provider? A: No. UnseenUser holds the data provider credentials. You only need an Apify account.

Q: What about Google's anti-scraping enforcement? A: Google's Terms restrict automated access to its services. The third-party data provider handles the data collection and bears the responsibility for its architecture's lawfulness. Your downstream use must comply with Google's Terms and with the publishers' rights in their headlines and articles.

Q: What if Google or a publisher sends a cease-and-desist? A: Notify UnseenUser within 48 hours via the Apify profile contact form (apify.com/UnseenUser) and cease using this Actor immediately.

Q: Can I use this data to train AI? A: NO, not without licensing. Publishers own the copyright in their headlines, snippets and articles, and Google's Terms restrict automated use of its services. This Actor's Terms do not authorize AI training on its output.

Q: What about minors? A: News headlines sometimes name or describe minors (crime, accident, school and sports news). This Actor's Terms prohibit using the output to identify, profile or contact minors. See Part 4 for details.

Q: Why did I get fewer articles than I asked for? A: Up to 700 per keyword; Google often has fewer, and the run returns what Google has. Google may have fewer articles for that keyword, country, language and time range. Repeated articles are skipped. With Top stories turned off, part of the search's results are Top-stories boxes that are not returned, so a request for 20 can return about 18. You are only charged for the article rows actually written.

Q: Why can a run return more rows than the search depth? A: One "Top stories" box can hold up to 20 articles, and each article becomes its own row. Every row, Top stories included, counts toward maxArticlesPerKeyword, and the list is trimmed to that number before anything is written or charged.

Q: Why do results differ by country and language? A: Google News picks publishers and stories for the country and language of the search. Choose the pair that matches the audience you want to watch.

Q: Can I get the full article text? A: No. The actor returns headlines, snippets, publisher domains (and publisher names for Top-stories articles) and links only. Open the url to read the article on the publisher's site, under that publisher's terms.

Q: Why are some links Google links? A: For some searches Google lists its own link (google.com/goto?...) instead of the publisher's. When Google redirects that link straight to the publisher, you get the publisher's link. Otherwise you get the Google News link, which opens the article in a browser, and the row has urlResolved: false. The headline and publish time are the same either way.

Q: Why did a keyword return a NO_RESULTS row? A: Google News had no articles for it with these filters. The status message suggests a wider time range or other keywords. NO_RESULTS rows are not charged.

Q: Why did a keyword return a SOURCE_UNAVAILABLE row? A: The search was accepted but its results did not arrive within the wait limit (15 minutes, or 45 minutes when more than 200 articles per keyword are requested), or the data source could not be reached. It is not a "no results" answer: try again in a few minutes. SOURCE_UNAVAILABLE rows are not charged.

Q: Is there an official Google News API? A: No. Google does not offer a public Google News API. This Actor gives you the same search through the Apify API: keywords in, one JSON row per article out, with country, language, time range and sort.

Q: Is this Google News API free? A: You can try it on the free Apify plan. Free Apify users receive up to 5 results per run. Upgrade to any paid Apify plan to remove this limit. This limit was set by the Actor developer, not by Apify. Paid usage is in the Pricing section above.

Q: Is there a free plan limit? A: Yes. Free Apify users receive up to 5 results per run. Upgrade to any paid Apify plan to remove this limit. This limit was set by the Actor developer, not by Apify.

Q: Do I need a Google News API key? A: No. There is no Google key to get. You only need an Apify account; to call the Actor from code, use your Apify API token.

Q: How is this different from a Google News RSS feed? A: An RSS feed gives you XML to parse yourself. This Actor gives one clean row per article with the publisher domain, publish time as an ISO date, Top-stories flag, repeats removed and a summary per keyword, for any of 213 countries and 129 languages, ready as JSON, CSV or Excel.

Q: How do I use it from Python or JavaScript? A: Call it with the Apify API client. Python example:

from apify_client import ApifyClient
client = ApifyClient("<YOUR_APIFY_TOKEN>")
run = client.actor("unseenuser/google-news").call(run_input={"keywords": ["tesla"], "maxArticlesPerKeyword": 20})
for item in client.dataset(run["defaultDatasetId"]).iterate_items():
if item["status"] == "ok":
print(item["publishedAt"], item["title"], item["url"])

In JavaScript, the apify-client package works the same way.

Q: Can I export Google News results to CSV or Excel? A: Yes. Every run's dataset downloads as CSV, Excel, JSON or XML, or through the Apify API.

Q: Can I get Google News alerts with this? A: Yes. Schedule the Actor (for example every hour or every morning) and connect an integration such as Slack, email, Google Sheets, Zapier or Make. Each run returns the articles Google News shows at that moment; use the past-hour or past-day time range, or filter by publishedAt, to keep only fresh ones.

Q: Does it monitor social media too? A: No. It covers Google News results only: news articles and Google's Top stories boxes. It is not a social listening tool.

🔧 How it works

  • Live data: every run searches Google News at run time, nothing is served from an old copy
  • No login: no Google account, cookies or proxies needed, only an Apify account
  • One row per article in the run's dataset, ready as JSON, CSV, Excel or through the Apify API
  • Speed: Most runs finish within a few minutes; when Google's queue is busy, a run can take up to about 15 minutes.
  • What ends a keyword: the maximum articles per keyword is reached, Google has no more articles, the free plan limit or your maximum cost per run is reached, or the results do not arrive within the wait limit (15 minutes, or 45 minutes when more than 200 articles per keyword are requested), which gives a free SOURCE_UNAVAILABLE row. A keyword that fails gets a free row and the run still finishes
  • Limits: keyword length max 700 characters; 1 to 700 articles per keyword; 213 countries; 129 languages
  • Repeats: an article already written for the same keyword is skipped and never charged
  • Restart-safe: if Apify moves the run to another server, searches already sent are picked up again, never repeated or charged twice

Apify Actor - Terms of Service

Version: 4.0 Effective Date: May 5, 2026

0. ACCEPTANCE BY USE - IMPORTANT

Read this section first.

These Terms of Service ("Terms") form a binding legal agreement between you ("User," "you," "your") and UnseenUser, the Publisher of this Apify actor ("UnseenUser," "the Publisher," "we," "us," "our").

0.1 How You Accept These Terms

You accept these Terms by any of the following actions, each of which constitutes a clear, affirmative act of acceptance:

  • (a) Running the Actor - Initiating any execution of the Actor on the Apify platform
  • (b) Using any output returned by the Actor for any purpose
  • (c) Continuing to access the Actor's listing or documentation after these Terms are visible

0.2 Continuing Acceptance

Each time you run the Actor or use its outputs, you reaffirm your acceptance of the then-current Terms. If you do not agree to these Terms or any subsequent update, you must stop using the Actor immediately.

0.3 No Anonymous Acceptance

You cannot disclaim acceptance by:

  • Failing to read these Terms before running the Actor
  • Running the Actor through automated systems
  • Sharing your Apify account with others who may not have read these Terms

By the act of running the Actor on Apify, you bind yourself, your organization (if applicable), and any individuals or systems acting on your behalf or under your authority.

0.4 If You Do Not Accept

If you do not agree to these Terms, you must not run the Actor. No use is authorized without acceptance.

PREAMBLE - UNDERSTANDING THE ARCHITECTURE

Before using the Actor, please understand the technical architecture of the service:

The Data Flow

You (User) → Apify Platform → Actor (software) → Third-Party API → Source Platform
↓
You (User) ← Apify Platform ← Actor (software) ← Third-Party API

What Each Party Does

  • You (the User): Run the Actor on the Apify platform with input parameters you choose
  • Apify: Operates the cloud infrastructure that hosts and executes Actors. Apify is a Czech-incorporated company (Apify Technologies s.r.o.) governed by its own Terms of Service.
  • The Publisher (us): Publishes software code (the Actor) on Apify's platform. The Actor is a thin wrapper that translates your input into requests to a third-party API and returns the API's responses to you. The Publisher does not operate scraping infrastructure. The Publisher does not store or retain data returned by the Actor. Because requests are made under the Publisher's provider accounts, copies of results may remain in those accounts as described in the Data Retention section of the Addendum. The Publisher does not access these copies except where needed to troubleshoot a run at the User's request. The Publisher does not see, log, or process the personal data of any individuals returned in the Actor's outputs beyond what is incidental to passing the data through.
  • Third-Party API Provider: DataForSEO (https://dataforseo.com). This is an independent third-party company that operates data infrastructure that retrieves public news search results from search engines and returns them as structured data.
  • Source Platform: Google (Google News public search results). This is the platform whose publicly visible data is accessed by the Third-Party API Provider.

Why This Matters

Your relationship with the Publisher is that of a software user to a software vendor. The Publisher has the responsibilities of a software vendor (functional code, accurate documentation) and the limits of one (the Publisher is not responsible for how you use the data you obtain).

These Terms operate alongside but do not replace:

  • Apify's Terms of Service and Acceptable Use Policy (governing your relationship with Apify)
  • DataForSEO (https://dataforseo.com) Terms of Service (governing the underlying data infrastructure)
  • Source Platform terms (Google, for Google News public search results) governing the public data accessed
  • Applicable law in your jurisdiction and the jurisdictions of data subjects

These Terms incorporate the actor-specific addendum published in each Actor's individual listing ("Addendum"). In the event of a conflict, the more restrictive provision applies.

1. NATURE OF THE SERVICE

1.1 What the Actor Is

The Actor is a software program published on the Apify platform. Each Actor:

  • (a) Accepts structured input from you on the Apify platform
  • (b) Translates that input into HTTP requests to a third-party API operated by DataForSEO (https://dataforseo.com)
  • (c) Receives HTTP responses from that third-party API
  • (d) Returns the response data to you in a structured format on the Apify platform

The Actor's source code is hosted on Apify's infrastructure. The Actor runs in Apify's cloud, not on the Publisher's servers. The Publisher operates no servers running the Actor.

1.2 What the Actor Is Not

The Actor is not:

  • (a) A scraping tool - the Publisher does not operate scraping infrastructure, proxies, headless browsers, or fake accounts
  • (b) A direct connection to any source platform - connections to source platforms are made by DataForSEO (https://dataforseo.com)
  • (c) A data storage or data retention service - the Publisher does not maintain a database of any data the Actor returns. Because requests are made under the Publisher's provider accounts, copies of results may remain in those accounts as described in the Data Retention section of the Addendum. The Publisher does not access these copies except where needed to troubleshoot a run at the User's request.
  • (d) A licensed access channel to Google (Google News public search results) or any other source platform
  • (e) Affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or authorized by any source platform

1.3 The Publisher's Limited Role

The Publisher's role is limited to:

  • (a) Designing and writing the Actor's source code
  • (b) Publishing the Actor on the Apify Store
  • (c) Maintaining the Actor (updating it when API providers change schemas)
  • (d) Providing documentation and customer support via Apify's contact mechanism

The Publisher is a software vendor, similar to a developer who publishes an app on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. The Publisher is not a data provider, data broker, data processor, or data controller for purposes of GDPR, CCPA, Israel's Privacy Protection Law, or equivalent.

1.4 The Third-Party API Provider's Role

DataForSEO (https://dataforseo.com) is an independent third-party company. It:

  • (a) Operates the data infrastructure that retrieves public news search results
  • (b) Maintains its own data sources and collection methods
  • (c) Provides its own Terms of Service governing its operations
  • (d) Is responsible for compliance obligations relating to the data collection itself

The Publisher is a customer of this provider. The Publisher is not its agent, partner, or representative.

2. WHO MAY USE THE ACTOR

2.1 Eligibility

You may use the Actor only if:

  • (a) You are at least 18 years old or the age of majority in your jurisdiction
  • (b) You have legal capacity to enter into binding contracts
  • (c) You are not located in or resident of a country subject to comprehensive sanctions by the United States, European Union, United Kingdom, or Israel
  • (d) You are not on any prohibited persons list

2.2 User Representations

By using any Actor, you represent and warrant that:

  • (a) Truthful identity: Information you provide about your identity and intended use is accurate
  • (b) Lawful intent: Your intended use complies with applicable law in your jurisdiction
  • (c) Source platform compliance: You will independently comply with the Terms of Service of any source platform whose data you obtain through the Actor
  • (d) Data subject rights: Where Actor outputs include personal data, you will respect data subject rights under applicable law
  • (e) No prohibited use: You will not use the Actor for any of the purposes prohibited in Section 4

These representations are continuous - they must remain true throughout your use.

3. PERMITTED USES

The Actor may be used for any lawful purpose, including:

  • Market research and competitive analysis
  • Academic research
  • Journalism and investigative reporting
  • Internal business intelligence
  • Brand monitoring
  • Recruitment research where consistent with applicable employment law
  • Building products that further process publicly available information lawfully

Specific permitted uses for each Actor are described in that Actor's individual listing and Addendum.

4. PROHIBITED USES

You may not use the Actor for any of the following:

4.1 Illegal Activity

Activity illegal under the law of your jurisdiction, the User's jurisdiction, or the jurisdiction of any data subjects.

4.2 Harassment, Stalking, and Personal Targeting

  • Compiling profiles for harassment, stalking, or doxxing
  • Tracking individuals' movements or activities without their knowledge
  • Building profiles of journalists, activists, dissidents, or vulnerable populations for retaliatory purposes

4.3 Discrimination

  • Using outputs for discriminatory employment, lending, housing, or insurance decisions based on protected characteristics
  • Building lists for discriminatory purposes

4.4 Spam and Unsolicited Commercial Communication

  • Sending unsolicited marketing in violation of CAN-SPAM, CASL, GDPR, PECR, Israeli Anti-Spam Law (סעיף 30א לחוק התקשורת), or equivalent laws
  • Building "lead lists" from scraped contacts without proper consent infrastructure
  • Reselling contact data for spam purposes

4.5 Fraud and Deception

  • Identity theft or impersonation
  • Generation of fake reviews, testimonials, or coordinated inauthentic behavior
  • Election interference or political disinformation
  • Securities fraud

4.6 Source Platform Abuse

  • Using outputs to circumvent technical protection measures of source platforms
  • Creating fake accounts on source platforms based on Actor outputs
  • Vote manipulation, engagement manipulation, or platform algorithm gaming
  • Building services that competitively substitute for source platforms

4.7 Reselling the Actor's Service

  • Reselling raw Actor outputs as your own data product or scraping-as-a-service
  • Sharing your Apify credentials to provide third parties indirect access
  • Building competing API services using Actor outputs

4.8 AI Training Without Authorization

  • Using Actor outputs as training data for commercial AI/ML models without separate licensing authority from the source platform

4.9 Sensitive Targeting

  • Specifically targeting or profiling based on health conditions, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, political opinions, or other sensitive characteristics
  • Targeting children under 16 (or local age of consent for data processing)

4.10 Privacy Law Violations

  • Processing personal data of EU/UK/California/Israeli residents without complying with applicable privacy law
  • Failing to honor data subject access, deletion, or objection requests
  • Processing data for purposes incompatible with its publication context

5. SOURCE PLATFORM TERMS - YOUR RESPONSIBILITY

5.1 Acknowledgment

The Actor accesses publicly visible data on third-party platforms ("Source Platforms") through the Third-Party API Provider (DataForSEO (https://dataforseo.com)). The Source Platform is Google (Google News public search results).

5.2 Your Sole Responsibility

You acknowledge:

  • (a) You are solely responsible for ensuring your downstream use of data obtained through the Actor complies with the Source Platform's Terms of Service
  • (b) The Publisher makes no representation that any specific use is permitted under any Source Platform's terms
  • (c) The Third-Party API Provider, not the Publisher, bears responsibility for the lawfulness of the data collection itself
  • (d) You should review Source Platform terms before commercial use:

5.3 Cease-and-Desist Compliance

If you receive a cease-and-desist letter or other legal demand from a Source Platform regarding your use of Actor outputs, you must:

  • (a) Cease the contested use immediately
  • (b) Notify UnseenUser within 48 hours via UnseenUser's Apify profile contact form (https://apify.com/UnseenUser)
  • (c) Cooperate with the Publisher as needed to mitigate
  • (d) Not assert against the Publisher any claim arising from your inability to use the Actor for that Source Platform

6. DATA PROTECTION - REFLECTING ACTUAL ARCHITECTURE

6.1 Roles Under Privacy Law

For purposes of GDPR, UK GDPR, CCPA, Israel's Privacy Protection Law (PPL) including Amendment 13, and equivalents:

  • You (the User) are the Data Controller of any personal data you obtain through the Actor and subsequently process for your own purposes
  • DataForSEO (https://dataforseo.com) is the entity that collects data from the Source Platform (Google, for Google News public search results) - it bears the responsibilities of a data processor or controller (depending on context) for the collection itself
  • The Publisher acts solely as a software vendor, not as a data controller or processor, because the Publisher does not store, retain, or substantively process personal data - the Actor merely passes API responses through. Because requests are made under the Publisher's provider accounts, copies of results may remain in those accounts as described in the Data Retention section of the Addendum. The Publisher does not access these copies except where needed to troubleshoot a run at the User's request.

6.2 No Data Retention by the Publisher

The Publisher confirms:

  • (a) The Publisher does not maintain a database of personal data obtained through the Actor. Because requests are made under the Publisher's provider accounts, copies of results may remain in those accounts as described in the Data Retention section of the Addendum. The Publisher does not access these copies except where needed to troubleshoot a run at the User's request.
  • (b) The Actor passes data from the Third-Party API directly to you on the Apify platform - data does not flow through the Publisher's infrastructure
  • (c) Apify's standard execution and operational logging may include limited information about Actor runs (input parameters, run duration, data volume) - this is governed by Apify's own privacy practices
  • (d) The Publisher does not access, view, or analyze your Actor outputs except as needed for technical support if you specifically share them with the Publisher

6.3 Your Obligations as Data Controller

Where your use of the Actor involves processing personal data, you are responsible for:

  • (a) Establishing a lawful basis for your processing (consent, legitimate interest with documented balancing test, contract, etc.)
  • (b) Providing transparent notice to data subjects as required by applicable law
  • (c) Honoring data subject access, rectification, erasure, restriction, and portability requests
  • (d) Implementing appropriate security measures
  • (e) Conducting Data Protection Impact Assessments where required
  • (f) Appointing a Data Protection Officer if your operations require one
  • (g) Registering databases with applicable supervisory authorities
  • (h) Honoring opt-out requests for direct marketing
  • (i) Cross-border transfer safeguards where data crosses borders

6.4 Israel's Amendment 13 - User Compliance

If your use of the Actor involves Israeli residents' personal data, you must comply with the Privacy Protection Law as amended (Amendment 13, effective August 14, 2025). These obligations are yours as the data controller, not the Publisher's as the software vendor.

6.5 Sensitive Data Targeting Restrictions

You will not use the Actor to specifically target, profile, or build datasets focused on:

  • Health or medical conditions
  • Religious beliefs
  • Political opinions
  • Sexual orientation or gender identity
  • Genetic or biometric data
  • Criminal history
  • Children under 16

7. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

7.1 Actor Code

The Actor's source code, schemas, documentation, and branding are owned by the Publisher. You receive a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the Actor for permitted purposes during your active subscription/run with Apify.

7.2 Output Data

The Publisher claims no ownership over the public data the Actor returns. Source Platforms may have copyright, database rights, or other rights in their data; data subjects may have copyright in user-generated content. Your use of output data must respect these rights independently.

7.3 Restrictions

You may not reverse engineer, decompile, or reuse the Actor's code in a competing actor.

7.4 Feedback

Feedback you provide may be used by the Publisher to improve products without compensation to you.

8. PRICING AND PAYMENT

8.1 Apify Platform Billing

8.2 Pricing Changes

The Publisher may change Actor pricing with at least 14 days' notice via the Actor's Apify listing.

8.3 No Refunds for Misuse

If your access is suspended or terminated for breach of these Terms, you forfeit any unused balance and are not entitled to refunds.

9. SERVICE AVAILABILITY AND CHANGES

9.1 No Uptime Guarantee

The Actor depends on:

  • (a) The Apify platform
  • (b) Underlying API provider (DataForSEO (https://dataforseo.com))
  • (c) Source Platforms' continued public accessibility

Any of these may change behavior, restrict access, or become unavailable without notice. The Publisher makes no uptime guarantees.

🛡️ Actor-Specific ToS Addendum - 📰 Google News Scraper - Articles by Keyword

This addendum supplements the Master Terms of Service V4.0. By running this Actor, you accept both the Master ToS and this addendum.

A. Architectural Disclosure

This Actor is a software wrapper. It accepts your input parameters, calls DataForSEO's Google News search (one request creates a queued search task, a second request reads its result), and returns the response data to you on the Apify platform. UnseenUser does not store, log, or substantively process the data returned. Because requests are made under UnseenUser's DataForSEO account, copies of results may remain in that account as described in the Data Retention section below. UnseenUser does not access these copies except where needed to troubleshoot a run at the User's request. The data flows from DataForSEO through Apify's runtime directly to you.

One additional request type, disclosed in full: for some searches the results contain Google redirect links (google.com/goto?...) instead of the publisher's own link. For those links only, the Actor itself, running on Apify, sends one request per link to Google, reads only the address of a plain HTTP redirect (the Location header), and stops there. It follows at most 3 redirects between Google addresses, stops as soon as Google answers with a page instead of a redirect (that page is never read, waited for or followed), never fetches the publisher's page, never downloads article text or images, uses no login, cookies or proxies, and does not attempt to bypass any technical protection measure. When Google does not redirect straight to the publisher, the Actor keeps the Google News link and marks the row urlResolved: false. See Section J.

Data Retention

DataForSEO: Requests are made through the Publisher's DataForSEO account using its standard (queued) method. According to DataForSEO's help center, results of these tasks are kept for 30 days and can be retrieved again with the task ID during that period (https://dataforseo.com/help-center/how-long-do-you-keep-results). DataForSEO does not publish a separate retention period for its request, usage or billing records. The Publisher does not access these stored results except where needed to troubleshoot a run at the User's request.

B. Nature of Data Returned

This Actor returns: one row per news article that Google News shows for your keyword, country, language and filters, with the headline (title), the publisher's name for Top-stories articles (source), the publisher's domain (domain), the article link (url: the publisher's link when Google redirects to it directly, otherwise a Google News link that opens the article in a browser; urlResolved says which), the snippet Google shows under the headline (snippet), the publish time (publishedAt as an ISO date and publishedText as Google words it), whether the article came from a "Top stories" box (isTopStory, topStoriesTitle), the search settings and the scrape time. It does NOT return the article's full text, images, author bylines, comments or reader data. Headlines and snippets are written by publishers and frequently name real people (public figures, and sometimes private individuals involved in news events, including victims, suspects and minors).

Where the Actor's output includes individual people's names, photos, contact details, or content authored by them, that data constitutes personal data subject to GDPR, CCPA, Israeli Privacy Protection Law (including Amendment 13), and equivalent privacy laws in your downstream processing - but only in your hands as the data controller, not in UnseenUser's hands as the software vendor.

C. Permitted Use Cases

You may use this Actor for the following purposes (non-exhaustive list):

  • Brand monitoring - see every headline that mentions your brand, product or CEO in the past day, sorted newest first
  • Competitive monitoring - follow the news coverage of competitors across several countries and languages in one run
  • Media monitoring - build a daily press clipping list with publisher, link and publish time ready for a spreadsheet or dashboard

D. Specifically Prohibited Uses

In addition to Master ToS Section 4 prohibitions, you may NOT:

  • Republish headlines and snippets as a public news feed, news website or app that substitutes for Google News or for the publishers' own pages
  • Use the article links to download, copy or republish full articles, paywalled content or images without the publisher's license
  • Build a competing search engine, news aggregator or search data resale service from the output
  • Use the output to train or fine-tune commercial AI models without licensing from the rights holders
  • Search for named private individuals to build a record of every news mention about them (see Section K)
  • Use crime, accident or court headlines to identify, profile, contact or harass the people named in them, including victims, witnesses, suspects and their families
  • Use the output to identify or contact minors named or described in news stories
  • Use the output to manipulate markets (for example, automated trading on fabricated or misattributed headlines) or to spread disinformation by stripping headlines of their source and date

E. Platform Terms of Service Considerations

Google's Terms of Service restrict automated access to Google's services, and Google has litigated against search result scraping (Google v. SerpApi, filed December 19, 2025, alleging circumvention of Google's protection measures under DMCA Section 1201). Google News results also contain headlines and snippets owned by the publishers, who license or permit their display on Google, not on third-party products. This Actor accesses publicly visible Google News search results via the third-party data provider named in Section A - that provider bears responsibility for the lawfulness of the data collection. Your downstream use must independently comply with Google's Terms of Service and with each publisher's rights and terms.

If Google issues a cease-and-desist regarding data obtained via this Actor, notify UnseenUser within 48 hours via the Apify profile contact form (apify.com/UnseenUser) and cease your use immediately. The same applies to a demand from a publisher.

Every row points to content that belongs to a news publisher. Copyright and related rights apply in layers:

  • Headlines - often short, but publishers treat them as editorial work; in the EU, the press publishers' right (Copyright Directive (EU) 2019/790, Article 15) covers online use of press publications by information society service providers, with an exception only for very short extracts and individual words
  • Snippets - extracts of the article text, owned by the publisher
  • Full articles - not returned by this Actor; reading them through url is subject to the publisher's own terms and paywall

You may:

  • Link to articles with their headline and publisher (the normal way of referring to news)
  • Analyze headlines and snippets for monitoring, counting, topic and sentiment research
  • Quote briefly with attribution where fair use, fair dealing or a quotation exception applies in your jurisdiction

You may NOT:

  • Republish snippets at scale in a product others read instead of the publisher's page
  • Strip the publisher name, link or date before sharing headlines
  • Rebuild full articles from multiple snippets or by fetching the linked pages at scale
  • Remove or bypass paywalls reached through the links

This Actor deliberately returns headlines, snippets and links only. It never returns full article text, so that the output stays within monitoring and research use.

G. AI Training - Special Notice

Google's Terms of Service restrict automated use of its services, and the publishers own the headlines and snippets this Actor returns. The Publisher (UnseenUser) does NOT authorize, and has no ability to authorize, AI training use of news content.

News publishers are among the most active litigants over AI training. Recent litigation (NYT v. OpenAI, Andersen v. Stability AI, Reddit v. Perplexity, multiple class actions) demonstrates AI training on platform data is contested. Get proper licensing or do not train on this data.

Using the output as retrieval context for an internal tool (for example, a dashboard that summarizes today's headlines for your own team, with links) is different from training a model on it, but it still needs to respect Section F: link back, attribute, and do not republish at scale.

Your AI training use is your own legal exposure.

H. People Named in the News

News headlines and snippets regularly name individuals. Treat them according to who they are and why they are in the news:

  • Public figures in their public role (politicians, executives, celebrities) - monitoring coverage of their public activity is ordinary media monitoring
  • Private individuals in a news event (victims, witnesses, accident or crime involvement, court cases) - their appearance in the news does not make it fair to collect, keep or reuse their names for other purposes
  • Minors - news about crime, accidents, schools and youth sports can name or describe children. You must NOT use this Actor to identify, profile, locate or contact minors, and you must delete such data from any derived dataset that is not strictly needed for the original research purpose
  • Sensitive categories - headlines can reveal health, religion, political views, sexual orientation or criminal allegations about named people. GDPR Article 9 and Article 10 data, and the Israeli Privacy Protection Law, apply to your processing of these

If you store headline datasets that name private individuals, set a retention limit, and honor deletion requests promptly (Master ToS 6.3). Criminal allegations in headlines are allegations, not findings: never use them for employment, housing, lending or insurance decisions (Master ToS 4.3).

I. Search Result Reliability

Google News results are a snapshot of what Google chose to show for one search at one moment. Plan for these limits:

  • Results change constantly - the same keyword can return different articles minutes apart, especially for breaking news
  • Results depend on country and language - the publishers and stories differ by market; they are not a global or complete list of coverage
  • Order is Google's - with sortBy: relevance, position reflects Google's ranking, not importance, reach or accuracy
  • Publish times are approximate - publishedText is Google's wording; publishedAt is the time the data source reports, which may differ from the publisher's own timestamp or a later update
  • Fewer results than requested - Google may hold fewer articles than asked for; repeats are skipped; with Top stories off, part of each search is not returned
  • Not a fact check - headlines can be wrong, misleading, satirical or later corrected; the Actor does not verify them
  • googleResultsEstimate is not a count - it is Google's rough estimate (10,500,000 for "artificial intelligence" in testing), useful only for comparing broad interest

Do not present the output as a complete record of media coverage, and do not base legal, financial or reputational decisions about a person or company on headlines alone.

In testing, one deep search returned 64 of 98 regular results as Google links (https://google.com/goto?url=<token>), where the token does not contain the publisher's address. For these links the Actor checks once whether Google redirects straight to the publisher:

  • What it does: sends one request to the Google link, without following it automatically; reads only the Location header of a plain HTTP redirect (301, 302, 303, 307 or 308); repeats for at most 3 hops while the address is still a Google address
  • What it does NOT do: it never reads, waits on or follows a page Google answers with (including Google's waiting or verification pages), never requests the publisher's page, never downloads article text, images or scripts, never logs in, never uses cookies, proxies or CAPTCHA solving, and never retries more than once
  • Limits: at most 5 links at a time, a 10-second timeout per request
  • When Google does not redirect to the publisher: url is the Google News link, which opens the article in a browser, urlResolved is false, and domain (and source for Top stories) come from the search result when Google gives them; the count appears in the keyword's summary row

These requests go from Apify's infrastructure to Google; Google may log them under its own policies. If Google blocks or limits these requests, the Publisher may stop sending them, in which case rows keep Google's links with urlResolved: false.

K. Monitoring vs. Surveillance - Aggregation Boundary

News monitoring is legitimate. Building a running file on a private person from every headline that mentions them is not. The line is drawn around who is searched for and what is kept:

UseStatus
Daily headlines for your brand, products, competitors or industry✅ Permitted
Coverage of public figures' public activity (statements, decisions, business moves)✅ Permitted
Research datasets of headlines on a topic, with links, for media studies✅ Generally permitted, with retention limits for names of private individuals
Repeated searches for a named private individual to log every mention over months❌ Surveillance, even if every headline is public
Compiling crime or court headlines into a lookup of named people for screening❌ Data broker activity - likely prohibited under the California Delete Act, GDPR Article 14 and Israeli Privacy Law Amendment 13
Tracking journalists' bylines and stories to target or pressure them❌ Prohibited (Master ToS 4.2)
  • ✅ "All headlines about our company in Germany in the past week" - permitted
  • ✅ "Top stories about the election in Israel, Hebrew, past day" - permitted (topic monitoring)
  • ❌ "Every article mentioning my ex-employee, every day" - surveillance, even if data is public
  • ❌ "Names from local crime headlines, merged with social profiles" - prohibited cross-source profiling (Master ToS 4.2, 6.5)

If a person named in your stored data contacts you, honor access and deletion requests within 30 days, do not route them to UnseenUser (UnseenUser is the software vendor, not the data controller), and document the request and your response.
