How to scrape YouTube live chat step by step

1. Paste one or more YouTube video, live stream, or channel URLs into Start URLs.
2. Set Maximum number of messages to how many messages you want per URL, or 0 for the whole chat replay.
3. Optionally choose the Chat type, turn on Only Super Chats and Super Stickers, or change the Live listening time.
4. Click Start and wait for the run to finish.
5. Download your data in JSON, CSV, Excel, or HTML from the Output tab.

• Start URLs: YouTube URLs to scrape. Supported pages:
  • Video and live stream pages (youtube.com/watch?v=..., youtu.be/..., youtube.com/live/...): returns the live chat while the stream is live, or the chat replay after it ended.
  • Channel pages (youtube.com/@channel or youtube.com/@channel/streams): returns the chat of the channel's latest streams.
  • Channel live page (youtube.com/@channel/live): returns the chat of the stream that is live right now.
• Maximum number of messages: how many chat messages to collect for each start URL. For a channel URL, the limit is shared by all of its streams. Use 0 for no limit.
• Chat type: "All messages" returns every message, like the "Live chat" view on YouTube. "Top chat" returns YouTube's filtered view without likely spam.
• Only Super Chats and Super Stickers: return only paid messages with their amount and currency.
• Live listening time (seconds): how long to collect new messages from a stream that is live right now. The run stops earlier when the stream ends or the message limit is reached.
• Streams per channel: how many of the latest streams to scrape for each channel URL.

The type field is one of textMessage, superChat, superSticker, membership, membershipGift, or giftRedemption. chatSource tells you whether the message came from a live stream (live) or a chat replay (replay).

You can download the dataset in JSON, CSV, Excel, XML, or HTML, or access it through the Apify API.

Notes

• Only public streams with chat turned on are supported. When the creator turned off chat or the chat replay, the stream is skipped with a warning.
• Members-only streams and scheduled streams that have not started yet are skipped.
• For a live stream, only messages sent while the actor is listening are collected (plus the few recent messages YouTube shows when you open the chat). Set Live listening time to how long you want to record.
• Super Chats can be sent without text, so message may be null for paid messages. videoOffsetSeconds and videoOffsetText are only available for chat replays.
• Amounts keep the format shown by YouTube (for example ¥5,000 or IDR 10,000). currency is null when the symbol is ambiguous.
• Channel URLs use the streams listed on the channel's "Live" tab (up to 30 latest streams).

How many messages can I scrape?

Set any number in Maximum number of messages, or 0 to export the whole chat replay. Long streams can have tens of thousands of messages.

Do I need a YouTube account?

No. The actor only collects publicly available chat messages. You do not need to log in or provide an API key.

Can I record a live stream for a long time?

Yes. Increase Live listening time (up to 6 hours) and keep Maximum number of messages at 0 or a high number. The run stops when the stream ends.

Can I scrape YouTube live chat on a schedule?
