What is News API?
News API is a tool that lets you scrape the latest news headlines and articles from BBC News, CNN, NPR, The New York Times, The Guardian, Google News and Hacker News in one run: headline, link, source, publication date, summary, author, image and topics, as one clean table. Pick your sources, add a keyword if you like, click Start, and download the articles as Excel, CSV or JSON.
- 📰 Seven sources, one table: the same fields for every outlet, ready for a sheet, database or app
- 🔎 Keyword and topic filters: whole-word keyword matching and section filters for the outlets that tag their stories
- 🧹 No duplicates: the same story is returned once
- 🔓 No login: no API keys or accounts for any of the sources
- 💸 Free to try: the $5 of free usage every Apify account gets each month covers about 10,000 articles
What can News API do?

What data can you extract from news sites?
| 📰 Headline | 🔗 Article link | 🏢 Source and source name |
| 📅 Publication date | 📝 Summary | ✍️ Author |
| 🖼️ Image | 🏷️ Topics or section | 🕒 Scrape time |
How to scrape news headlines
- Create a free Apify account (no credit card needed).
- Open News API.
- Pick your News sources, or leave the list empty for all seven.
- Optionally type a Keyword filter (for example
election) or a Category filter (for examplepolitics), set Max articles per source, and click Start. - When the run finishes, download the articles as Excel, CSV, JSON, HTML or XML.
Schedule it hourly or daily in Apify Console to keep a running feed.
How much does it cost to scrape news headlines?
You pay $0.50 per 1,000 articles. Apify platform usage is included in that price, and there is no start fee, so there is nothing else to pay.
For example, all seven sources at 20 articles each (140 articles) cost $0.07.
Every Apify account gets $5 of free usage each month, enough for about 10,000 articles. See the Pricing tab for details.
⬇️ Input
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| News sources | Any of bbc, cnn, npr, nyt, guardian, google-news, hacker-news. Empty means all seven |
| Keyword filter | Keep only articles whose headline or summary contains this word or phrase (whole words, any case) |
| Max articles per source | 1 to 100 articles per source (default 20) |
| Category filter | Keep only articles tagged with this topic or section. Only CNN, The New York Times and The Guardian tag their articles |
Example: election news from four outlets.
{"sources": ["bbc", "cnn", "nyt", "guardian"],"query": "election","maxArticlesPerSource": 20}
Example: technology stories from The New York Times and The Guardian.
{"sources": ["nyt", "guardian"],"category": "Technology","maxArticlesPerSource": 50}
⬆️ Output
You get one row per article. You can view them as a table in Apify Console or download them as Excel, CSV, JSON, HTML or XML.
{"title": "Jeff Probst Made ‘Survivor’ His Life’s Work. He’s Not Done Yet.","url": "https://www.nytimes.com/2026/09/24/arts/television/jeff-probst-survivor-popcast-interview.html","source": "nyt","sourceName": "The New York Times","publishedAt": "2026-09-25T19:55:11+00:00","summary": "As the show’s 51st season begins, the host and showrunner discussed its future, sharing contestants with other shows and prediction market spoilers.","author": "Joe Coscarelli, Jon Caramanica and David Billet","imageUrl": "https://static01.nyt.com/images/2026/09/22/multimedia/probst-promo-pkmw/probst-promo-pkmw-mediumSquareAt3X.jpg","categories": ["Probst, Jeff", "Reality Television", "Survivor (TV Program)"],"scrapedAt": "2026-09-27T15:16:52.573468+00:00"}
What each source provides:
| Source | Summary | Image | Topics |
|---|---|---|---|
| BBC News | yes | yes | no |
| CNN | no | no | section (politics, business, us, world...) |
| NPR | yes | no | no |
| The New York Times | yes | yes | yes |
| The Guardian | yes | yes | yes |
| Google News | yes | no | no |
| Hacker News | no | no | no |
CNN stories carry the publication date without a time. If a source cannot be read, the run status tells you, and you still get the others.

No. You need no API keys, accounts or logins for any of the seven sources.
How fresh are the headlines?
Each run reads what the sources publish at that moment; most update every few minutes.
How many articles does each source have?
Usually 20 to 100 current stories per source. The keyword and category filters apply first, then Max articles per source.
Can I search older news?
No. News API returns current headlines. Schedule it to build your own archive over time, or use Google News Scraper API to search past dates by keyword.

No. You get the headline, summary and details. Open the url for the full story.
Where do Google News links go?
They open the story through Google News, which forwards to the publisher's page.
Can I add my own feeds?
Not in News API. It is built for these seven sources with one consistent format. Google News Scraper API reads any RSS or Atom feed.
Can I connect News API to other tools or AI agents?
Yes. Start runs and download results with the Apify API or the Python and JavaScript clients, send results to Make, Zapier, n8n, Google Sheets or Slack with Apify integrations and webhooks, or let AI assistants and agents run it through the Apify MCP server at mcp.apify.com.
Is it legal to scrape news sites?
News API only collects headlines, summaries and details that the outlets publish openly. Articles can name people, and personal data may be protected by laws such as GDPR, so only scrape for a legitimate reason, respect the publishers' copyright, and ask a lawyer if you are unsure. You can read more in Is web scraping legal?
News API is an independent tool. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by the BBC, CNN, NPR, The New York Times, The Guardian, Google or Hacker News.
