Nonprofit Financial X-Ray (IRS 990)
Analyze IRS Form 990 filings for any US nonprofit organization. This actor leverages the ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer API to retrieve detailed financial data including revenue breakdowns, expense reports, total assets, and multi-year filing histories for over 1.8 million tax-exempt organizations registered with the IRS.
What It Does
The Nonprofit Financial X-Ray actor queries ProPublica's comprehensive database of IRS Form 990 filings. You can search by organization name, keyword, Employer Identification Number (EIN), or filter by US state. For each nonprofit found, the actor returns structured financial data pulled directly from their public IRS filings, including total revenue, total functional expenses, total assets, NTEE classification codes, and tax period information.
When you look up a specific EIN, the actor retrieves the full filing history for that organization, giving you multi-year trend data in a single API call. When searching by keyword, results are paginated automatically until the requested number of results is reached.
Use Cases
- Donor Due Diligence: Before making a major gift, verify a nonprofit's financial health by examining revenue trends, expense ratios, and asset growth over multiple years.
- Grant Evaluation: Foundations and grant-making organizations can quickly assess applicant financials to determine organizational capacity and fiscal responsibility.
- Investigative Journalism: Reporters can pull structured financial data for nonprofit investigations, comparing executive compensation against program spending across peer organizations.
- Competitive Benchmarking: Nonprofit leaders can compare their organization's financial metrics against similar organizations in their NTEE category or geographic region.
- Academic Research: Researchers studying the nonprofit sector can build large datasets of 990 financial data for statistical analysis and trend identification.

Tips
- Use the EIN lookup for the most detailed data, including full filing history across multiple years.
- Combine keyword search with state filtering to narrow results to a specific geographic area.
- The NTEE code field helps classify organizations by mission type (e.g., "P33" = Family Services).
- Subsection code 3 indicates a 501(c)(3) public charity, the most common type.
- Results are sourced from publicly available IRS filings via ProPublica and may lag behind the most recent filing by several months.
Data Source
All data comes from the ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer API, which aggregates IRS Form 990, 990-EZ, and 990-PF electronic filings. The data is public information filed with the Internal Revenue Service.
