Get official vehicle counts for England's strategic road network as a clean table. The data comes from National Highways' WebTRIS service: about 11,000 active roadside sensors (MIDAS loops, TAME and TMU count sites) on every motorway and major A-road. Each row gives traffic volume, average speed, a breakdown by vehicle length and the share of heavy vehicles.

Who it's for

  • Retail, EV-charging, hospitality and billboard site selection: how many vehicles pass a junction each day, and how many of them are HGVs.
  • Logistics and fleet teams checking typical flows and speeds by hour on a corridor.
  • Transport planners, consultants and students who need counts for a report without wrangling the raw API.
  • Analysts and data journalists comparing traffic before and after roadworks, events or holidays.

What you get

  • Daily, hourly or raw 15-minute rows per sensor.
  • Total vehicles, volume-weighted average mph, and counts in four length bands (under 5.2 m for cars, 5.2 to 6.6 m for vans, 6.6 to 11.6 m for rigid lorries and buses, over 11.6 m for articulated HGVs).
  • Heavy vehicle share in percent, and how many 15-minute intervals had data, so you can spot partial days.
  • Road, carriageway direction, site type and coordinates for every sensor.
  • Find sensors by road (M25, M6, A1M, A14 and so on), by site ID, by text in the site description, or by distance from any latitude and longitude.
  • A sites-only mode that returns the sensor directory for picking site IDs.

Example output

{"siteId":"5","siteName":"M25/5764B","road":"M25","direction":"Anti-clockwise","siteType":"MIDAS","date":"2026-06-23","aggregation":"daily","totalVolume":52680,"avgMph":56.6,"vehiclesUnder5_2m":18673,"vehicles5_2to6_6m":15008,"vehicles6_6to11_6m":6513,"vehiclesOver11_6m":12488,"heavyVehicleSharePct":36.1,"intervalsWithData":79,"intervalsExpected":96,"latitude":51.575617,"longitude":0.283162}

Inputs

What to return (traffic counts or the site list), road, site IDs, site name contains, near latitude and longitude with a radius, include inactive sites, start and end date, row granularity, include empty periods, max sites and max results.

Leave the dates empty to get the latest published week for your sites.

Pricing

$1 per 1,000 rows plus a $0.005 start fee. A week of daily totals for 5 sensors is 35 rows, well under a cent. A month of hourly rows for one sensor is about 720 rows, roughly $0.72.

Notes

  • Source: National Highways WebTRIS API. Contains National Highways information licensed under the Open Government Licence.
  • Coverage is England's strategic road network only (motorways and trunk A-roads), not local roads.
  • National Highways publishes validated counts a few months behind real time, so the newest data is usually from a few months ago. This is a historical and planning dataset, not a live traffic feed.
  • Some sensors have gaps. Sensors with no counts at all for your dates are skipped and the next matching sensor is used, so Max sites counts sensors that actually returned data. Check intervalsWithData against intervalsExpected before treating a day as complete.
  • Only aggregate vehicle counts are collected. No personal data and no number plates.
