Taiwan Company Data — GCIS registry & TWSE financials

Taiwan Company Data — Directors, Shareholders & Financials

Look up any Taiwanese company by its Unified Business Number (UBN / 統一編號) and get a clean, structured profile — the full board of directors and supervisors with each member's shareholding, registered & paid-in capital, business scope, address, responsible person and status — straight from Taiwan's official GCIS registry (Ministry of Economic Affairs). Listed companies are automatically enriched with financials (balance sheet + income statement), English name and governance contacts from the TWSE OpenAPI.

Built on official open-government APIs and pure JSON parsing — no API key, no login, no headless browser — so it's fast, cheap and doesn't break when a website changes. Try it with 22099131 (TSMC).

  • 🇹🇼 The whole national registry is reachable — GCIS covers all of Taiwan's registered companies (800K+); look up any of them by UBN
  • 👔 Directors & supervisors with shareholdings — the complete board, each member's stake and any juristic-person backer — a depth most registries never expose
  • 📈 Listed firms auto-enriched — English name, chairman/CEO/contacts, and the latest balance sheet + income statement from TWSE
  • One run → one clean, flat dataset (JSON / CSV / Excel / API), no proxies or third-party keys required

Quick start (API)

Get TSMC's full profile — registry, board, capital and financials — in one call:

curl -X POST "https://api.apify.com/v2/acts/foxlabs~taiwan-company-data/run-sync-get-dataset-items?token=YOUR_APIFY_TOKEN" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{ "ubns": ["22099131"], "includeFinancials": true }'

Prefer no code? Open the Input tab, paste one or more UBNs (or company names), and click Start — then download the results.

Example record. The registry identity, capital, board (positions, names, shareholdings) and business-scope fields are returned exactly as fetched from GCIS; the financials block shows representative headline figures to illustrate the shape — a live run carries the full balance-sheet and income-statement breakdown documented above. A lookup with no match returns { "matched": false, "error": "…", ... }.

Input & filters

This Actor is lookup / enrichment based — you bring the companies, it returns rich records. There is no whole-registry sector or location filter (GCIS doesn't expose one); you identify companies by UBN (best) or name.

  • UBNs — one or more 8-digit Unified Business Numbers. The most precise input, guaranteeing an exact match.
  • Company names — best-effort resolution via the GCIS keyword registry. Traditional Chinese works best (e.g. 台積電). Ambiguous names may resolve to the wrong company — check resolvedFrom + the returned name, or pass the UBN.
  • Include financials — enrich TWSE-listed companies with their latest statements, English name and governance contacts (default true).
  • Max results — a hard cap on records returned (you're billed per result); 0 = unlimited. Bounded by how many UBNs/names you supply. Up to 100,000.
  • Concurrency — parallel lookups (default 8, up to 25). Lower it on very large lists if you hit GCIS rate limits.
  • Proxy — Apify Proxy is sufficient for these government APIs.
{ "ubns": ["22099131", "04541302"], "includeFinancials": true }

Example inputs (copy & paste)

// 1) Deep single lookup: TSMC — registry, full board, capital & financials
{ "ubns": ["22099131"], "includeFinancials": true }
// 2) Batch-enrich a portfolio of UBNs (TSMC, Hon Hai/Foxconn, HTC)
{ "ubns": ["22099131", "04541302", "16003518"], "includeFinancials": true, "maxConcurrency": 8 }
// 3) Best-effort lookup by name (Traditional Chinese works best)
{ "companyNames": ["台積電", "鴻海", "宏達電"], "includeFinancials": true }
// 4) Firmographics only — skip financials for a faster, lighter run
{ "ubns": ["22099131", "04541302"], "includeFinancials": false }
// 5) Mixed input — combine a UBN with a best-effort name (MediaTek)
{ "ubns": ["22099131"], "companyNames": ["聯發科"], "includeFinancials": true }
// 6) Large list — cap results and lower concurrency to respect GCIS rate limits
{ "ubns": ["22099131", "04541302", "16003518"], "maxResults": 500, "maxConcurrency": 3 }

Use cases

  • KYC / KYB & due diligence. Onboarding or vetting a Taiwanese counterparty or supplier? Pass its UBN → verified legal identity, status, registered capital, responsible person, and the full board with shareholdings in one record — the ownership signal compliance teams need.
  • Semiconductor & electronics supply-chain mapping. Taiwan is the heart of the chip ecosystem (TSMC / Foxconn / MediaTek / ASE). Feed a list of supplier UBNs → firmographics, board interlocks and (for listed vendors) financial health, to model concentration and counterparty risk.
  • Lead generation & CRM enrichment. Have a list of Taiwanese UBNs or names? Enrich each with capital, industry scope, status and — for listed firms — contact email, website and phone, so reps prioritise real, current accounts.
  • Investment & M&A research. Screen targets with directors, ownership and the latest balance sheet + income statement (revenue, gross profit, operating/net income, EPS, assets/equity) side by side — no juggling two portals.
  • Ownership / UBO & interlock analysis. Director shareholdings and juristic-person backers are exposed universe-wide (not just for listed firms), so you can trace who controls a company and map shared directors across a group.
  • Competitive & market research. Pull a set of competitors' UBNs to compare capital, scope and (where listed) financials — Taiwanese firms that global B2B databases barely cover.

Performance & throughput

Each run first loads the TWSE listed-company index once (used to detect and enrich listed firms), then fetches every company in parallel — 3 lightweight GCIS JSON calls per company (basics, business scope, directors), plus an in-memory financials join for listed firms. There's no headless browser, so runs are fast and cheap. Throughput scales with Concurrency (default 8, up to 25) and is bounded only by the GCIS API and your Apify plan — lower concurrency if a very large list starts hitting rate limits. Requests retry with back-off on transient errors.

Integrations

JavaScript (apify-client):

import { ApifyClient } from 'apify-client';
const client = new ApifyClient({ token: 'YOUR_APIFY_TOKEN' });
const run = await client.actor('foxlabs/taiwan-company-data').call({
ubns: ['22099131', '04541302', '16003518'], includeFinancials: true,
});
const { items } = await client.dataset(run.defaultDatasetId).listItems();

Python (apify-client):

from apify_client import ApifyClient
client = ApifyClient("YOUR_APIFY_TOKEN")
run = client.actor("foxlabs/taiwan-company-data").call(run_input={
"ubns": ["22099131", "04541302", "16003518"], "includeFinancials": True,
})
for item in client.dataset(run["defaultDatasetId"]).iterate_items():
print(item["ubn"], item.get("name"), item.get("directorsCount"))

Also works with Make / n8n / Zapier (Apify app → run this Actor, map the input), scheduled runs, webhooks, and the Apify MCP server for AI agents.

Data quality

  • Registry fields (name, UBN, status, capital, responsible person, address, business scope, directors) come from GCIS and are present for every matched company.
  • Listed-only fields (English name, financials, chairman/CEO, email/website/phone, auditor, stock code) exist only for TWSE-listed companies (about 1,000 firms); for everyone else they're null. Non-listed Taiwanese companies aren't legally required to publish financial statements — a legal reality, not a gap in the Actor.
  • Everything is read live from the official GCIS and TWSE APIs on each run. Contacts and financials come only from those sources — never fabricated; missing values are null.

Pricing

Pay per result — you're billed per company record returned, and listed-company enrichment is included in that price. Cost scales linearly with the number of companies, so set Max results to cap spend. Because the Actor uses free government open APIs and no headless browser (no proxy or third-party cost), platform usage per run is low. There's an Apify free tier to evaluate the full feature set before you scale.

FAQ

Do I need an API key or account with GCIS or TWSE? No. Both are official open-government APIs — no key, no login.

Can I look up by company name instead of UBN? Yes, best-effort via the GCIS keyword registry (Traditional Chinese works best). A UBN guarantees the exact company; names can be ambiguous — check resolvedFrom and the returned name.

What is a UBN? The Unified Business Number (統一編號) — Taiwan's 8-digit company registry / tax identifier. It's the key that unlocks a precise match.

Why are financials / nameEnglish empty for some companies? Those fields come from TWSE and exist only for the ~1,000 listed companies. Non-listed firms return null there — they aren't required to publish statements.

Can I use or resell this data commercially? It's official open-government data (GCIS under Taiwan's Open Government Data License; TWSE OpenAPI), which permits commercial reuse with attribution. Records carry a source string; keep it. See the legal note below.

How fresh is the data? Each run reads live from the GCIS and TWSE APIs, so you get the current registry and the latest published statements.

What export formats are available? JSON, CSV, Excel, HTML, or via the Apify API/integrations.

Are director and shareholder names included? Yes — positions, names, shareholdings and any juristic-person backer are public registry data. You're responsible for your own legal basis when processing personal data (see below).

How many companies can I look up in one run? As many UBNs/names as you supply; Max results caps the output (up to 100,000, 0 = unlimited).

Does it use a headless browser — can it break easily? No. It calls official JSON APIs directly, so it's fast and resilient to website changes.

Troubleshooting

  • matched: false / "No company found" → the UBN isn't in the GCIS registry, or a name didn't resolve. Double-check the 8-digit UBN, or supply the UBN instead of the name for a guaranteed match.
  • financials is null → the company isn't TWSE-listed. Only listed firms (~1,000) publish statements; this is expected for the vast majority of companies.
  • A name resolved to the wrong company → name lookup is best-effort. Compare resolvedFrom with the returned name; if it's off, pass the exact UBN.
  • Errors / slow-downs on a very large list → you may be hitting GCIS rate limits. Lower Concurrency (e.g. to 3–5) and re-run.
  • Lookup, not bulk export. You provide the companies (by UBN or name); this Actor does not filter or dump the entire registry by sector or location — GCIS doesn't offer that. UBN is the reliable key.
  • Financials are listed-only. Non-listed companies have no published financial statements, so financials, nameEnglish and the TWSE contact fields are null for them — a legal limitation, not a coverage miss.
  • nameEnglish is the TWSE English short name (英文簡稱), available for listed companies only — not a full English translation, and not present for private firms.
  • Personal data. Director, supervisor and shareholder names and shareholdings are individuals' data published by law in the official registry. Redistribution is permitted under the source licenses, but if you process this personal data you're responsible for your own legal basis (e.g. GDPR / Taiwan's PDPA).
  • Attribution & licenses. GCIS data is provided under Taiwan's Open Government Data License; TWSE data via its OpenAPI — both permit commercial reuse with attribution. Records carry a source string; keep it.
  • Not affiliated with the Ministry of Economic Affairs / GCIS or the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE); this Actor redistributes their public open data.
