How are the figures normalized?

Companies do not all use the same XBRL concept: revenue alone has several. For each field, this Actor takes the first concept available in a fixed order, so you get one column per metric. When a figure was restated in a later filing, you get the latest value, with the link to the original filing.

Limits

  • Covers companies that file 10-K and 10-Q reports with US GAAP figures in USD. Most foreign companies file 20-F reports under IFRS and are not covered.
  • A field is null when the company does not report that concept. Banks and insurers often have no revenue or grossProfit.
  • After a reorganization, a ticker can point to a new parent company with no filing history yet. The run log names these companies.
  • A fourth quarter is not returned as a quarter, because companies report it inside the annual 10-K.
  • Quarterly operatingCashFlow and capitalExpenditure are null, because 10-Q reports give them year to date. Use annual figures for cash flows.
  • Figures are as reported by the companies. This Actor does not check them and this is not investment advice.
  • A run accepts 500 tickers and returns 5,000 statements at most.

FAQ

Where does the data come from?

From the public XBRL APIs of the SEC, which publish the figures of company filings. This Actor adds ticker lookup, period selection, one field name per metric and a stable output format.

Does the output contain personal data?

No. It only contains company-level financial figures. Officer names, insider trades, addresses and phone numbers are not requested. Each row is also checked before being saved.

Why is my ticker unknown?

The ticker must be in the current SEC list. Delisted companies and some share classes are missing. The run log names the unknown tickers, and BRK.B is read as BRK-B.

Why did my run return no results?

The company probably does not report US GAAP figures in USD. The run log names these companies.

Why did my run fail with an "Invalid" message?

The message names the field to fix. Tickers use letters, digits and hyphens, such as AAPL or BRK-B.
