Find out whether a book niche is worth publishing into before you design a single page. Enter a keyword like gratitude journal or nurse planner and get the top organic books on Amazon with their real Best Sellers Rank, price, reviews, publisher, page count, estimated monthly sales and royalties, plus one scored niche summary that tells you how much demand there is and how hard the competition will be.

Paperback, hardcover and Kindle. 14 Amazon stores. JSON, CSV or Excel.

Why Use This Scraper?

  • Real Best Sellers Rank read from every book's own product page, with the category ranks under it
  • Print and Kindle in one run: the Books department (where low-content journals, planners and notebooks sell) and the Kindle Store, side by side for the same keyword
  • 14 KDP storefronts: amazon.com, .co.uk, .de, .fr, .it, .es, .nl, .pl, .ca, .com.au, .co.jp, .in, .com.br and .com.mx, each through an IP in that country so prices and ranks are local
  • Estimated sales and royalties per book, using KDP's own royalty rules (60% / 50% print, 70% / 35% Kindle, print cost from the page count, Kindle delivery cost from the file size). The formula used is written into every row
  • A niche summary per keyword: result count, median BSR, price and reviews, share of indie books, share of new books, Kindle Unlimited share, share of ads on page one, three component scores, an opportunity score, a verdict and a confidence level
  • Independent-publisher detection so you can see whether self-publishers are winning the niche or big houses own it
  • Autocomplete suggestions for every keyword, and optional full analysis of each suggestion as its own sub-niche
  • Change tracking for scheduled runs: what moved since last week, and which books entered or left the top results
  • Organic only by default: sponsored books never distort the niche numbers

Overview

This actor is built for KDP self-publishers, low-content and print-on-demand creators, publishing coaches and book-market researchers who need the numbers behind a niche decision.

Each run produces two kinds of rows in one dataset, told apart by recordType:

  • book: one row per analyzed book (search position, format, price, reviews, BSR and category ranks, publisher, publication date and age, page count, ISBNs, Kindle Unlimited, estimated sales, revenue and royalty)
  • niche: one row per keyword × store × department with the medians, shares, scores, verdict and autocomplete suggestions for that niche

The Output tab has a Niche summaries view and a Books view so you can read each shape on its own.

Supported Inputs

Keywords

Any phrase a buyer would type into Amazon's search box:

{ "keywords": ["gratitude journal", "nurse planner", "dog mom notebook"] }

Each keyword is searched in every store and every department you select, so 3 keywords × 2 stores × 2 departments = 12 niche analyses.

Book URLs or ASINs

Competitor books you want read directly, without a search:

{
"bookUrls": [
"https://www.amazon.com/dp/1961355221",
"https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1683835506",
"B0C2RH7K8N"
]
}

The store comes from the link. A bare ASIN uses the first store in marketplaces.

Unsupported inputs

  • Amazon search URLs, category or best-seller list URLs (use keywords instead)
  • Audible-only titles and non-book products (they can appear in Books searches and are returned with format: "other", but no royalty is estimated)
  • Anything behind an Amazon login, such as KDP dashboard data or exact sales

Use Cases

WhoWhat they do with it
KDP self-publishersShortlist niches with buyers and few reviews before writing or designing
Low-content creatorsCompare journals, planners, coloring and activity books by BSR and review barrier
Publishing coaches and agenciesBuild repeatable niche reports for clients, across several stores
Book marketersTrack a niche weekly and see new entrants, price moves and rank shifts
Market researchersMeasure how much of a category indie authors hold versus traditional publishers
Keyword researchersExpand one seed into sub-niches with Amazon's own autocomplete

How It Works

How the KDP Niche Analyzer works: keywords in, book pages read, niche scored

  1. You enter keywords (and optionally book links), pick stores and departments.
  2. The actor searches each store's Books or Kindle department through a residential IP in that country and reads the top organic results, page after page, until it has the number of books you asked for.
  3. It opens each book's product page and reads Best Sellers Rank, category ranks, publisher, publication date, page count, ISBNs, file size and the Kindle Unlimited offer.
  4. It estimates daily and monthly sales from the BSR and the royalty per sale from KDP's rules, then writes one row per book.
  5. It summarizes the organic books into one niche row with medians, shares, scores and a verdict, and adds the autocomplete suggestions.

Common scenarios

Quick check of one niche in print and Kindle on amazon.com:

{
"keywords": ["gratitude journal"],
"departments": ["books", "kindle"],
"maxBooksPerKeyword": 20
}

Find sub-niches from one seed:

{
"keywords": ["coloring book for adults"],
"analyzeAutocompleteSuggestions": true,
"maxSuggestionsPerKeyword": 8,
"maxBooksPerKeyword": 15
}

Weekly monitor across the US, UK and Germany (schedule it in Apify):

{
"keywords": ["nurse planner", "teacher planner"],
"marketplaces": ["com", "co.uk", "de"],
"monitorChanges": true
}

Output Overview

Every row has recordType. Book rows come first for each niche, followed by that niche's summary row.

A book row is flat apart from three small arrays: authors, categoryRanks ({ rank, category }) and otherFormats ({ format, label, price }).

A niche row is flat apart from warnings, topBooks (the five best-ranked books), autocompleteSuggestions and changes (only when monitorChanges is on and a previous run exists).

Prices are numbers in the store's currency, named in currency. Shares are fractions from 0 to 1. Scores are 0 to 100.

How the numbers are calculated

Nothing here is a black box. All of it is computed from the organic books in the row's own search.

  • Estimated daily sales = 56,600 ÷ BSR^0.95 on amazon.com (about 80 a day at BSR 1,000, 9 at 10,000, 1 at 100,000), scaled down for smaller stores (UK and DE 0.3, JP 0.15, CA and FR 0.1, IT and ES 0.08, AU 0.07, others less). Monthly = daily × 30.
  • Royalty per sale: paperback 60% of list price (50% under 9.99) minus print cost; hardcover 60% minus print cost; print cost uses KDP's black-ink rates by page count for the US, UK and EU stores. Kindle 70% minus delivery cost per MB inside the 70% price band, otherwise 35%, and 35% when the delivery fee would make 70% pay less. Stores whose print costs are not modelled return null.
  • Demand score = median BSR on a log scale, BSR 1,000 → 100, BSR 2,000,000 → 0.
  • Review ease score = median review count on a log scale, 0 reviews → 100, 5,000 → 0.
  • Competition ease score = review ease (weight 50) + share of indie books (20) + share of books under 1,000 reviews (15) + result-count ease (15, 1,000 results → 100, 100,000 → 0).
  • Opportunity score = √(demand × competition ease), so a niche needs both buyers and room. It is left empty when fewer than 3 books have a BSR.
  • Verdict: strong opportunity (65+), worth a closer look (45-64), competitive (25-44), saturated (under 25), or low demand whenever demand is under 30.
  • Confidence: high with 10+ books carrying a BSR, medium with 5-9, low below that.

FAQ

Are the sales figures real?

No one outside Amazon has real sales numbers. The BSR is real and read from the page; sales and royalties are estimates from the published formulas above, good for comparing books and niches with each other. The formula is in every row.

Why do some books have no Best Sellers Rank?

Amazon shows no BSR for a book that has never sold, and it sometimes hides it. Those books still count for reviews, price and age, and the niche row has a warning saying how many lacked a BSR.

Why is the Books department the default and not Kindle?

Low-content books (journals, planners, notebooks, coloring books) only exist in print, and that is where most KDP niche research happens. Add kindle to departments to cover ebooks too.

How is "independently published" decided?

A book counts as indie when Amazon lists the publisher as "Independently published" or CreateSpace, when there is no publisher line, or when the publisher is the author's own imprint. A 979-8 ISBN alone does not count, because traditional publishers use that range too.

Do sponsored books affect the scores?

No. The niche summary uses organic results only. The share of ads on page one is reported in sponsoredShareFirstPage, and includeSponsored adds the ad books as rows if you want to see them.

How does Kindle Unlimited show up?

A KU book is flagged isKindleUnlimited: true and its price is the buy price, not the $0.00 shown to members. shareKindleUnlimited gives the KU share for the niche.

What does change tracking compare?

With monitorChanges on, each niche row gets a changes block against the previous run of the same keyword, store and department: result count, median BSR, median reviews, median price and opportunity score differences, plus newBooks and droppedBooks (ASINs). The first run has changes: null.

Is there a limit on the free plan?

Free Apify plans get up to 30 books per run. Paid plans have no cap beyond the run's maximum cost setting.

What does the actor not return?

Exact sales, KDP dashboard data, ad bids, keyword search volumes, review texts and A+ content.

Pricing

Pay per result, nothing else:

  • Book (with its product page): from $0.85 per 1,000, depending on your Apify plan
  • Book, search only (fetchBookDetails: false): about half the book price
  • Niche summary: one per keyword, store and department
  • Autocomplete suggestions, change tracking and the result-count lookup are free. A book link that returns no page is not charged.

🤖 For AI Agents & LLM Apps

Compact reference for AI agents calling this actor via the Apify MCP server or the Apify API (actor: memo23/kdp-niche-analyzer).

Purpose: score Amazon KDP book niches by keyword: top organic books with real BSR, publisher, pages, estimated sales and royalties, plus one scored summary per keyword × store × department.

Minimal input:

{ "keywords": ["gratitude journal"], "maxBooksPerKeyword": 10 }

Output: one dataset, two row types by recordType. book: asin, url, title, authors, format, price, listPrice, currency, ratingValue, reviewsCount, bestSellersRank, categoryRanks {rank, category}, publisher, isIndependentlyPublished, publicationDate, bookAgeDays, pageCount, isbn13, isKindleUnlimited, estimatedMonthlySales, royaltyPerSale, estimatedMonthlyRoyalty, organicPosition. niche: keyword, marketplace, department, resultCount, medianBsr, medianPrice, medianReviews, shareUnder50Reviews, shareIndependentlyPublished, sharePublishedLast12Months, demandScore, competitionEaseScore, opportunityScore (0-100 or null), verdict, confidence, topBooks, autocompleteSuggestions, changes.

Behaviors an agent should know:

  • Niches = keywords × marketplaces × departments; books per niche = maxBooksPerKeyword. Keep both small for a quick answer.
  • For a single yes/no on a niche, read the niche row's opportunityScore, verdict and confidence.
  • marketplaces takes store TLDs (com, co.uk, de, …); departments takes books and/or kindle.
  • Sales and royalties are formula estimates, not Amazon data; royaltyFormula states the arithmetic.
  • Billing: one book event per book row, one niche-summary event per niche row; suggestions and change tracking are free. Free plans stop at 30 books per run.
