Email Verifier — Email Validation, MX and SMTP Checks (No API Key)

Apify Actor No API key No login No cookies Export formats MCP ready Pay per result

Email Verifier checks a list of addresses and returns one structured result for each input. It checks address syntax, looks up the domain's mail-exchange (MX) records, identifies common free and disposable providers, and reports the result of a bounded SMTP recipient check when the destination mail server allows one. The Actor does not send an email, does not need an API key, and does not ask you to log in.

Get your first results in under 2 minutes. Start with the prefilled reserved-domain examples, then replace them with addresses you are authorized to process.

The output keeps uncertain cases visible. valid, invalid, catch-all, and unknown are separate outcomes. A mail server can accept every address, block verification probes, greylist, or change its policy. An SMTP check is one signal, not a promise that a message will reach an inbox.

Table of contents

What this Actor checks

  • Parses each submitted address and reports whether its syntax matches the Actor's practical email format checks.
  • Looks up DNS MX records for syntactically valid domains.
  • Reports the selected MX host when DNS returns one.
  • Flags common free-mail providers and a maintained set of disposable-mail domains.
  • Checks SMTP availability and, when possible, whether the server accepts the recipient command.
  • Detects a catch-all response when a server accepts a random, nonexistent recipient. Catch-all domains are marked uncertain rather than treated as confirmed deliverable.
  • Returns an explicit unknown result when the destination cannot be confirmed, including when a server blocks or times out a check.
  • Writes one dataset item for each processed input. Invalid syntax is still a result, not a dropped row.

Who uses it

  • Sales operations teams cleaning a permission-based prospect list before importing it to a CRM.
  • Marketing operations checking a list collected with appropriate consent before a campaign.
  • Developers adding a verification stage to an enrichment or data-quality workflow.
  • Researchers separating malformed addresses, domains without MX records, catch-all domains, and inconclusive checks.
  • Small businesses checking a handful of addresses without signing up for a separate verification API.

This Actor is not a way to discover addresses. It verifies only addresses you provide. Use it only when you have a lawful basis to process the data and follow the rules that apply to your list and location.

Output fields

FieldTypeDescription
emailstringThe exact submitted address for this result. Always populated.
syntaxValidbooleanWhether the local syntax check accepted the address. Always populated.
statusstringvalid, invalid, catch-all, or unknown. Always populated.
confidencestringhigh, medium, or low, based on the checks that completed. Always populated.
domainstring or nullDomain parsed from a syntactically valid address. Populated when parsing succeeds.
hasMxbooleanWhether DNS returned an MX record for the domain. Always populated.
mxHoststring or nullThe preferred MX host returned by DNS. Populated when an MX record exists.
smtpDeliverableboolean or nullRecipient acceptance signal. null means SMTP did not provide a conclusive answer.
catchAllbooleanWhether the mail server accepted a random address during the catch-all check.
isFreeProviderbooleanWhether the domain appears in the Actor's common free-mail provider set.
isDisposablebooleanWhether the domain appears in the Actor's disposable-mail domain set.

status is a summary of the observed checks, not a guarantee of future delivery. A valid response means the checks accepted the address at that time. A later message can still bounce because the mailbox is full, disabled, filtered, or changed after the run.

Status meanings

StatusMeaning
validSyntax and MX checks passed, and the SMTP recipient check returned an acceptance response.
invalidSyntax failed, or the domain could not receive mail according to the available DNS/SMTP result.
catch-allThe server accepted a random recipient, so individual mailbox existence could not be established.
unknownThe domain has mail routing, but the server did not provide a reliable recipient answer.

How to run it

  1. Open the Actor and keep the prefilled sample if you only want to inspect the output shape.
  2. Replace emails with addresses you have permission to process. Use one address per line in the input form.
  3. Set maxItems to the number of rows you want, up to 100.
  4. Start the run. The Actor returns a row for each address it processed.
  5. Open the Verification results view for a compact table. Use DNS and domain details to inspect MX results, or download the full dataset as JSON, CSV, or Excel.
  6. Treat unknown and catch-all as inconclusive. Do not turn them into a hard pass or hard fail without another authorized verification method.

Runs are bounded to 100 addresses. A run with no usable email input finishes SUCCEEDED with zero rows and zero result charges; inspect OUTPUT for the INPUT_ERROR reason.

Input example

{
"emails": [
"test@example.com",
"invalid@@example.com",
"ops@example.com"
],
"maxItems": 3
}

The reserved example domains are safe placeholders for trying the form. They are not evidence that a real mailbox exists. Replace them with your own authorized test addresses when checking a live mail setup.

InputTypeDefaultLimit
emailsarray of stringsPrefilled examplesUp to 100 addresses. Malformed addresses are skipped without a result charge and explained in OUTPUT; valid addresses continue to verification.
maxItemsinteger1001–100; limits how many addresses from the list are processed.

Output example

The following row is from an actual Actor run using the reserved address test@example.com. It is a verification finding, not proof of a deliverable mailbox. Malformed input is explained in OUTPUT rather than stored as a verification row.

[
{
"email": "test@example.com",
"hasMx": false,
"domain": "example.com",
"mxHost": null,
"status": "invalid",
"catchAll": false,
"confidence": "high",
"syntaxValid": true,
"isDisposable": false,
"isFreeProvider": false,
"smtpDeliverable": null
}
]

The example uses the values from the live core run. For the reserved test domain, mxHost and smtpDeliverable were null because no MX record was returned. Null means no value was available; it is not an SMTP rejection.

Accuracy and limits

Email verification is probabilistic because mail servers control what anonymous SMTP clients can learn. This Actor reports observed responses; it cannot see a mailbox, deliver a message, or guarantee that a message will be accepted later.

  • A domain can have MX records while the server refuses anonymous checks. That result is unknown, not a claim that the address is valid.
  • A catch-all server can accept any recipient. The Actor returns catch-all and low confidence rather than claiming every mailbox exists.
  • Greylisting, connection limits, temporary outages, network policy, and provider filtering can prevent a conclusion.
  • Disposable-domain detection uses a maintained list. New or unlisted temporary-mail domains may not be recognized.
  • Free-provider detection covers common domains. A domain's classification can change, and a business may use a custom domain hosted by a free provider.
  • Syntax validation is intentionally pragmatic. It does not prove that the mailbox exists.
  • MX records can change after a run. Keep the run timestamp with the result when freshness matters.
  • Some servers accept a recipient during SMTP and still reject a later message. Delivery depends on sender reputation, message content, authentication, and the recipient's policy.
  • The Actor does not send DATA, does not send a message body, and does not confirm inbox placement.
  • The Actor processes up to 100 addresses per run. Larger lists should be split into batches you are permitted to process, and each row is billed as a result.

Pricing

The Actor uses pay-per-event pricing. Each stored result row is one apify-default-dataset-item event at $0.0005 per row ($0.50 per 1,000 rows). A run that fails before writing rows has no result-row event, and there is no actor-start event. Apify platform usage, if applicable to your account, is shown separately by Apify.

A batch of 100 processed addresses can create up to 100 result events. Set your own run spending limit if you need a stricter ceiling.

Tips

  • Start with a small batch and inspect status, confidence, and smtpDeliverable before changing your import rules.
  • Keep unknown and catch-all records in a review queue instead of deleting them.
  • Use isDisposable as a risk flag, not as a substitute for your organization's acceptance policy.
  • Deduplicate your input before a run if duplicate addresses should not create duplicate result rows.
  • Retain the result timestamp and your source for each address if you need an audit trail.
  • Don't upload an entire contact database just to test the Actor. The prefilled sample shows the output shape.
  • Use the dataset's JSON API in automated jobs; use CSV or Excel for a quick review by a person.
  • Avoid repeated checks against the same mail host in a short period. Mail providers may throttle or block probes.
  • A low-confidence result deserves a second, authorized check. Do not silently relabel it as valid.

Want other data?

Use another Actor when the task is discovery or enrichment rather than verification:

Cross-platform data: Apify Store also has Actors for public Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Reddit, YouTube, and Google data. Check each Actor's scope and terms before combining its output with an email list.

MCP and AI agents

The Actor can be called by an AI agent through Apify's MCP integration. Give the agent only the addresses it is allowed to process. Ask it to preserve the unknown and catch-all distinctions and to report counts by status, not to claim that every valid result will reach an inbox.

A useful instruction is: "Verify this authorized test list. Keep the original address in each row, summarize counts by status, and do not treat unknown or catch-all as confirmed deliverable."

Integrations and API

Use the Apify API token from your account's API settings. Do not paste a token into a public document, a task input, or a shared chat.

Run synchronously and wait up to five minutes:

curl -X POST "https://api.apify.com/v2/acts/myagizm~email-verifier/run-sync?token=$APIFY_TOKEN" \
-H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
-d '{"emails":["test@example.com"],"maxItems":1}'

Start a run asynchronously:

curl -X POST "https://api.apify.com/v2/acts/myagizm~email-verifier/runs?token=$APIFY_TOKEN" \
-H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
-d '{"emails":["test@example.com"],"maxItems":1}'

Fetch the default dataset after substituting the dataset ID from the run response:

$curl "https://api.apify.com/v2/datasets/$DATASET_ID/items?clean=true&format=json&token=$APIFY_TOKEN"

Apify also supports JavaScript and Python clients, scheduled runs, webhooks, and direct dataset exports. See the Apify API documentation for authentication and run options. For help with this Actor, use its Issues tab.

FAQ

Does the Actor send an email?

No. It performs syntax and DNS checks, then may open an SMTP connection and issue recipient-check commands. It does not send a message body or run an inbox-placement test.

Does valid guarantee delivery?

No. It means the checks accepted the address at run time. The mailbox can change, and the receiving provider can reject a later message.

What does unknown mean?

The domain has a mail route, but the server did not provide enough information to confirm the recipient. Common causes include blocked probes, timeouts, greylisting, or temporary policy responses.

What does catch-all mean?

The server accepted a random recipient that should not exist. Individual mailbox existence cannot be confirmed from that response.

Why can an address be invalid when its syntax is correct?

A syntactically correct address can use a domain without a usable MX record, or the server can explicitly reject the recipient. The status describes the available checks, not the syntax alone.

Why is smtpDeliverable null?

The SMTP exchange did not return a clear recipient-level accept or reject response. Null does not mean false.

Does the Actor verify disposable email?

It flags domains in its disposable-domain set. The list is not exhaustive, so a new or unlisted provider may not be flagged.

Can it identify Gmail, Outlook, or other free providers?

It flags common consumer mail domains in isFreeProvider. A custom domain hosted by a free provider may not be recognized.

Can I submit one address?

Yes. Put it in the emails list as a single string.

Can I submit a CSV file?

The input form accepts a list of strings. For CSV data, extract the address column first or use an integration that supplies an array of strings.

What is the maximum batch size?

Up to 100 addresses per run. maxItems can lower the number processed.

Are duplicate addresses removed?

No. Each submitted occurrence is treated as an input and can produce its own result row. Deduplicate first if you want one row per unique address.

What happens to malformed addresses?

Malformed addresses are skipped before verification, with no dataset row or result charge. Inspect OUTPUT for INPUT_ERROR or the skipped-input details. A syntactically valid address can still produce an invalid/nonexistent-domain verification row.

Why did a real mailbox return unknown?

The provider may block anonymous SMTP recipient checks. This is an inconclusive response, not proof that the mailbox is absent.

Does the Actor use a third-party verification API?

The Actor uses public DNS and SMTP protocol responses. It does not ask for a vendor API key.

Can I use it for a cold-email campaign?

Only process addresses when you have a lawful basis and comply with the rules that apply to your campaign. This Actor does not grant consent or make a list legally permissible.

Does it store my input in the output?

Each result includes the submitted address so you can match it to your list. Do not submit addresses you are not allowed to process. The Actor's operational logs omit the email value and the MX hostname.

Why does the DNS view show a null MX host?

The domain had no MX record available to this run, or the address did not pass syntax parsing. Check hasMx and domain alongside mxHost.

Can I export results?

Yes. Use the dataset export menu for JSON, CSV, Excel, XML, or RSS where supported. The API endpoint can return JSON or other supported formats.

Can I schedule the Actor?

Yes. Apify schedules can run the Actor on a recurring basis. Review the source list and legal basis before each scheduled run.

Does the Actor need a proxy or browser?

No browser or login is needed for DNS and SMTP checks. Mail providers can still restrict server-to-server verification.

How do I avoid charges on an invalid run?

Provide at least one email string. A run with an empty email list finishes SUCCEEDED with zero rows and an INPUT_ERROR reason in OUTPUT. Only result rows create result events.

Where do I report a problem?

Open an issue on the Actor's Apify page and include the run ID, the status, and a sanitized example. Do not post a full contact list or credentials.

Actor

status字符串valid、invalid、catch-all 或 unknown。

  5. 查看 Verification results 表格,或切换到 DNS and domain details。

{
"emails": [
"test@example.com",
"invalid@@example.com",
"ops@example.com"
],
"maxItems": 3
}

[
{
"email": "test@example.com",
"hasMx": false,
"domain": "example.com",
"mxHost": null,
"status": "invalid",
"catchAll": false,
"confidence": "high",
"syntaxValid": true,
"isDisposable": false,
"isFreeProvider": false,
"smtpDeliverable": null
}
]

Actor

AI Agent

curl -X POST "https://api.apify.com/v2/acts/myagizm~email-verifier/run-sync?token=$APIFY_TOKEN" \
-H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
-d '{"emails":["test@example.com"],"maxItems":1}'

curl -X POST "https://api.apify.com/v2/acts/myagizm~email-verifier/runs?token=$APIFY_TOKEN" \
-H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
-d '{"emails":["test@example.com"],"maxItems":1}'

$curl "https://api.apify.com/v2/datasets/$DATASET_ID/items?clean=true&format=json&token=$APIFY_TOKEN"

Actor

Actor

Actor
