Chicago Crime Scraper

Pulls reported Chicago crimes by type and year through Chicago Open Data. No login, no proxy, no browser.

Input

FieldTypeNotes
primaryTypestringExact type in upper case, e.g. THEFT. Omit for all.
yearintegerCalendar year. Omit for the most recent records.
arrestOnlybooleanOnly incidents resulting in an arrest. Default false.
maxItemsintegerCap on incidents, most recent first. Default 100.

Output

One row per incident: id, caseNumber, date, primaryType, description, locationDescription, arrest, domestic, beat, district, ward, communityArea, year, latitude, longitude.

Notes

  • primaryType is an exact, upper-case match — the dataset's own vocabulary (THEFT, CRIMINAL DAMAGE, DECEPTIVE PRACTICE). Input is upper-cased for you, but it is still exact rather than a substring.
  • arrest and domestic arrive as real booleans in some rows and as the strings "true"/"false" in others, depending on the export path, so both forms are accepted rather than trusting the type.
  • year is filtered as a number in SoQL, not a quoted string — quoting it silently matches nothing.
  • Locations are block-level by design: Chicago rounds coordinates to protect victim privacy, so a point identifies a block, not an address.
