RxNorm Scraper

Looks up normalized drug names, RxCUI codes and term types through the US National Library of Medicine's RxNorm API. No login, no proxy, no browser.

Input

FieldTypeNotes
drugNamesarrayRequired. Drug or ingredient names. Default ["aspirin", "metformin"].
maxItemsPerDrugintegerCap on concepts per name. Default 50.

Output

One row per concept: searchedName, rxcui, name, synonym, termType, termTypeName, language, suppressed.

Notes

  • One drug name expands to hundreds of concepts. "aspirin" alone returns clinical drugs, branded drugs and packs — every strength and form. That is what maxItemsPerDrug bounds, and why searchedName is kept on each row.
  • The response nests concepts inside conceptGroup entries, and some groups carry no concepts at all; those are skipped rather than emitted as blank rows.
  • termType (TTY) is the key to the data model: IN is an ingredient, SCD a clinical drug, SBD a branded one. The expanded name is added alongside.
  • suppressed marks concepts RxNorm no longer considers current; they are returned rather than hidden, since they still appear in historical records.
