Search IRS-derived nonprofit profiles and Form 990, 990-EZ, and 990-PF filing data through the public ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer API. Look up one exact EIN or search by organization name, state, NTEE category, and 501(c) subsection. Each found record includes source links, a retrieval timestamp, coverage notes, and interpretation limits.

The default run looks up American National Red Cross EIN 53-0196605 and returns one rich paid dataset item with its available nested filing history.

No-match, invalid-input, and temporary source-unavailable outcomes are explicit dataset items instead of unexplained crashes or empty runs.

Evidence limits

ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer aggregates IRS Exempt Organizations Business Master File and Form 990-series extracts/PDFs. Availability varies by organization and tax year and generally lags submission and IRS processing.

A listing, ruling date, or recent filing does not prove current tax-exempt status, good standing, charity-registration compliance, identity, grant/donation eligibility, or financial health. IRS and ProPublica data can lag, omit amended or late filings, and contain filer-reported values. Confirm current federal status with IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search and check the relevant state charity registry when a decision requires it. Missing data does not prove zero or nonexistence.
