Data comes from the IRS Exempt Organizations Business Master File (updated quarterly) and IRS Annual Extract of Tax-Exempt Organization Financial Data, accessed via the ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer API. This is public data. No authentication required.

Coverage: Form 990, 990-EZ, and 990-PF filings from 2011 to present.

How many organizations are in the database? Over 2 million IRS-recognized tax-exempt organizations.

How current is the data? The IRS Business Master File is updated quarterly. Filing data is extracted as new 990s are filed.

What's the difference between search and EIN lookup? Search returns basic profile info for multiple organizations. EIN lookup returns the full profile plus all available Form 990 filings with detailed financial data.

Can I filter by revenue or asset size? Not directly through the API, but you can export results and filter in a spreadsheet or database.

Are private foundations included? Yes. Form 990-PF filers are included. Use 501(c)(3) filter to find both public charities and private foundations.
