How the scoring works

The MCP produces a Multi-Pillar ESG Score with three separately scored dimensions.

Environmental Pillar (0-35 points) evaluates EPA ECHO violations and penalty amounts, air quality measurements against WHO guidelines, energy intensity from EIA data, and disaster/climate exposure from GDACS. Companies with recent EPA violations and poor air quality in operating areas receive lower environmental scores.

Social Pillar (0-35 points) assesses OSHA workplace safety citations (especially serious, willful, and repeat violations), MSHA mining safety records, DOL wage/hour back wages owed, and ILAB forced labor/child labor indicators in the supply chain. ILAB flags trigger mandatory enhanced due diligence under EU CSDDD.

Governance Pillar (0-30 points) examines OFAC and OpenSanctions screening results, corporate registration transparency via OpenCorporates, LEI verification status, and World Bank governance indicators for the operating jurisdiction.

Additional scoring models:

  • SASB Materiality Map identifies the 5 most material ESG factors for the company's sector (energy, mining, manufacturing, apparel, technology, financial, healthcare, food)
  • Supply Chain Country Risk classifies sourcing countries as HIGH or STANDARD risk based on ILAB flags, World Bank governance, and trade flow patterns
  • EU CSRD Compliance Gap checks data availability against ESRS standards (E1 Climate Change, S1 Own Workforce, S2 Workers in Value Chain, G1 Business Conduct) and flags gaps
ESG GradeScore RangeAssessment
A80-100Strong ESG performance across all pillars
B60-79Good performance with some gaps
C40-59Moderate risk -- improvement areas identified
D20-39Significant ESG risks requiring attention
F0-19Critical ESG failures -- enhanced due diligence required

Use cases for ESG supply chain intelligence

Supplier ESG Due Diligence

Run comprehensive ESG assessments on suppliers combining environmental violations, labor compliance, and governance transparency before onboarding or contract renewal.

EU CSRD Compliance Preparation

Identify compliance gaps against ESRS reporting standards and CSDDD supply chain due diligence requirements before mandatory reporting deadlines.

Supply Chain Reshoring Analysis

Assess country-level ESG risk for sourcing decisions using ILAB forced labor data, World Bank governance indicators, and UN COMTRADE trade flows.

Portfolio ESG Screening

Screen portfolio companies with SASB-aligned materiality mapping to identify sector-specific ESG risks and improvement opportunities.

ESG Trend Monitoring

Track year-over-year enforcement data patterns (EPA violations, OSHA citations, DOL actions) to measure whether a company's ESG performance is improving or deteriorating.

Anti-Corruption Governance Checks

Verify corporate governance integrity through sanctions screening, ownership transparency analysis, LEI verification, and jurisdiction-level governance indicators.

How much does it cost?

This MCP uses pay-per-event pricing. You are only charged when a tool is called -- there is no subscription or monthly fee.

The Apify Free plan includes $5 of monthly platform credits, enough for initial ESG screenings at no cost.

Cost examples:

  • Full company ESG assessment (15 actors): $3.00
  • Environmental compliance check: $3.00
  • SASB materiality report: $6.00
  • CSRD compliance gap analysis: $6.00

How it works

  1. You call a tool (e.g., company_esg_assessment) with a company name, optional sector, and country
  2. The MCP dispatches parallel requests to up to 15 Apify actors simultaneously
  3. EPA violations, air quality, OSHA citations, wage enforcement, forced labor data, sanctions, corporate records, trade flows, and economic indicators are collected
  4. The ESG scoring engine computes Environmental, Social, and Governance pillar scores, SASB materiality mapping, and CSRD compliance gaps
  5. A structured JSON response is returned with the composite ESG score, grade, pillar breakdowns, and recommendations

FAQ

Q: How does this compare to MSCI ESG or EcoVadis? A: This MCP uses publicly available government enforcement data (EPA, OSHA, DOL) rather than company self-reported questionnaires. It provides quantified metrics from regulatory databases, offering an independent verification layer.

Q: Does it cover Scope 1/2/3 emissions? A: It provides energy consumption data from EIA and air quality data from OpenAQ as proxies for environmental impact. Full GHG Protocol Scope 1/2/3 accounting requires company-reported data not available in public databases.

Q: Which SASB sectors are supported? A: Energy, mining, manufacturing, apparel, technology, financial services, healthcare, and food. Each sector has specific material factors mapped from SASB standards.

Q: How does the CSRD gap analysis work? A: It checks data availability against four key ESRS standards -- E1 (Climate Change), S1 (Own Workforce), S2 (Workers in Value Chain), and G1 (Business Conduct) -- and classifies each as DATA AVAILABLE, REVIEW NEEDED, CRITICAL GAP, or NEEDS ASSESSMENT.

Q: Is it legal to use this data? A: All data sources are public government databases and international organization registries. See Apify's guide on web scraping legality.

Q: Can I use this for EU CSDDD compliance? A: Yes. The labor rights assessment specifically flags ILAB forced labor indicators and triggers CSDDD enhanced due diligence alerts. The supply chain country risk tool identifies high-risk sourcing countries requiring due diligence.
