What it does

A temperature blanket is a knit or crochet project with one row per day, colored by that day's temperature. This tool fills in the whole pattern for you: enter a ZIP code (or a weather station) and a year, and get one row per day with the high, low, and average temperature, the color band, a suggested color name, and a hex color.

Good for birth-year blankets, wedding-year blankets, memorial blankets, and this year's blanket (current year returns days through yesterday).

How to use it (no code)

  1. Click Try for free or Start.
  2. Type a ZIP code, for example 43215, and a year, for example 2025.
  3. Pick which temperature sets the color: daily high (most common), low, or average.
  4. Optional: set where the first band starts, how many degrees per color, and how many colors.
  5. Click Start. Export to Excel, CSV, or JSON and print it as your row-by-row pattern.

Example input

{"zip": "43215", "year": 2025, "metric": "high", "bandStartF": 20, "bandWidthF": 10, "colors": 10}

Output fields

Same fields in the same order on every row; missing values are null. date, dayOfYear, weekday, stationName, stationId, stationState, stationLat, stationLon, distanceMiles, highF, lowF, averageF, blanketTempF, metric, band, bandLabel, colorName, colorHex, note, disclaimer, credit, sourceUrl, retrievedAt (ISO 8601 with offset), retrievedAtLocal (U.S. Central), qcStatus (ok or flagged), qcNotes, error.

Default colors (coldest to warmest)

Navy, Royal blue, Sky blue, Aqua, Sage green, Grass green, Mustard, Orange, Red, Burgundy, Plum, Charcoal. With the defaults (start 20 F, 10 degrees per color, 10 colors): below 20 F, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, and so on up to 90 F and up. Swap in your own yarn for each band.

Limits

  • Uses the nearest station that reported at least 95% of days that year (searching about 40 miles, then about 100 miles). Days the station missed are kept, left blank, and flagged so you can fill them in.
  • Station readings are preliminary and can be revised. Recent days may change.
  • Large rural ZIP code areas use the center point of the ZIP area, which can be far from town (for example 99701 in Alaska). The row shows the station and its distance; use a station id for an exact station.
  • U.S. stations only.
