What is Mastodon Scraper?

Mastodon Scraper collects public posts from Mastodon and the fediverse. Give it hashtags (python; rust), accounts (Gargron@mastodon.social, https://fosstodon.org/@kev) or ask for trending posts, and it returns every post with its text, author, favourites, boosts and replies, hashtags, mentions, media, link previews and polls. It works with any Mastodon instance, reads each account from its home server, pages through the whole timeline, and needs no login or API key. $0.50 per 1,000 posts.

Use it for social listening and brand monitoring outside X/Twitter, research datasets, tracking tech communities, or archiving an account.

How to use Mastodon Scraper

  1. Enter Hashtags and/or Accounts, several separated by ;.
  2. Optional: tick Trending posts, or change the Instance used for hashtags and trending (default mastodon.social, which federates posts from across the network). With no input at all, the Actor returns trending posts.
  3. Set Max posts per source (default 100). For accounts you can skip replies and boosts.
  4. Run it and download the posts as JSON, CSV, Excel or HTML, or read them through the API.

Posts found by more than one source are kept once.

How much does it cost?

Pay per result: $0.0005 per post ($0.50 per 1,000), with volume discounts on paid Apify plans. Sources that fail (an unknown account, an instance that is down) are listed in the ERRORS record and cost nothing. Set Maximum cost per run to cap spend.

What it can't do

Mastodon's full-text search and the public "firehose" timeline need a logged-in user on most big instances (mastodon.social answers "This method requires an authenticated user"), so the Actor doesn't offer keyword search. Use hashtags instead: they are how Mastodon posts are discovered. Private and followers-only posts are never visible.

Using Mastodon Scraper with AI agents

The Actor is pay-per-event with limited permissions, so AI agents can call it through Apify's MCP server (mcp.apify.com), for example with {"hashtags": "opensource", "maxPosts": 50}. It also accepts hashtag, tags, account, profiles, url and urls.

FAQ

Is scraping Mastodon legal? The Actor reads only public posts through each server's public API, the same data any logged-out visitor sees. Respect the privacy of the people you collect and the rules of each instance.

Does it work with other fediverse servers? Hashtags and trending work on Mastodon-compatible servers. Accounts must be on a server that supports the Mastodon API.

How far back can it go? Account timelines go back through the account's whole history on its home server. Hashtag timelines hold what that instance has seen.
