You need your own USPTO API key (free)

USPTO serves patent data only through its Open Data Portal (ODP), and every ODP request needs an API key tied to a verified USPTO.gov account. This actor uses your key; it does not include one.

Create a free USPTO.gov account at account.uspto.gov.
Verify your identity with ID.me when the portal asks (a one-time step USPTO requires for API keys).
Sign in at data.uspto.gov, open My ODP, and copy your API key.
Paste it into the usptoApiKey input (stored as a secret).

Without a key: Demo Mode (the default) returns built-in sample data. A live run without a key finishes successfully with one informational row (needsApiKey: true) explaining how to get a key, and charges nothing beyond the Actor start fee.

Each patent record has: applicationNumber, patentNumber (when granted), title, status, filingDate, grantDate, publicationNumber, applicationType, firstApplicant, firstInventor, inventors, applicants, cpcClasses, groupArtUnit, examiner, and a link to the record on data.uspto.gov. ODP covers applications filed in 2001 and later. limit is 1 to 100 per run.

Pricing

Each successful live call that returns at least one USPTO record charges one event named after the task (prices on the Pricing tab), plus the standard Actor start fee. Not charged: Demo Mode, runs without a key, rejected keys, errors, empty results, the claims and citations notices, and the trademark sample tasks.

Troubleshooting

"USPTO Open Data Portal rejected the API key"

Copy the key again from data.uspto.gov (My ODP). Keys are tied to a verified USPTO.gov account.

"rate limit reached (429)"

USPTO limits requests per key. Wait a minute and run again.

No results

Try fewer or broader keywords, or check the spelling of the company or inventor name.
