🔎 Search NIH RePORTER grants with useful filters

Grant writers, research teams, universities, and life-science analysts can search public NIH RePORTER projects and awards. The Actor returns one structured dataset row for each eligible project or award, with funding, investigators, recipient organization, dates, abstracts, research terms, program officers, and a direct source link when NIH publishes it. That gives you a clear NIH grants search for funding review, grant writing, research planning, and funding analysis.

  • Search a research topic and review matching awards in NIH Grants.
  • Find projects for one or more principal investigators or organizations in NIH Grant Reporter.
  • Look up one project number and open its funding details in NIH RePORTER Database.
  • Review 2026 NIH funding with year, agency, mechanism, state, or amount filters in NIH Funding 2026.
  • Search awards within a date or amount window in NIH Award Search.

📦 Read each NIH project row in context

Each dataset row keeps the project number and title needed to identify a source project. It can also include funding amounts, the NIH agency and grant mechanism, investigator names, normalized names, recipient details, project dates, an award notice date, the source abstract, indexed research terms, program officers, and the direct NIH RePORTER page.

Choose one search method, add its matching topic, name list, organization list, or project number, then apply any shared filters. Run the Actor and open the results link to view the returned dataset.

⚙️ Input

Input fields

The search method chooses one path: topic, principal investigator, recipient organization, or project number. Shared filters apply to every path. Fields for other paths are ignored.

FieldTypeWhat it does
searchMethodstring (required)Chooses topic, principalInvestigator, organization, or projectNumber.
topicstringSearches one NIH RePORTER topic or keyword. Used with topic.
principalInvestigatorsarray of stringsSearches one or more principal investigator names. Used with principalInvestigator.
organizationsarray of stringsSearches one or more recipient organization names. Used with organization.
projectNumberstringLooks up one NIH project number. Used with projectNumber.

fundingAgenciesarray of stringsKeeps records from the listed NIH institutes or funding agencies.
activityMechanismsarray of stringsKeeps records with the listed grant activity codes or funding mechanisms.
recipientStatesarray of stringsKeeps records for the listed recipient state names or codes.
projectStatusstringactive_only returns active projects. include_completed also includes completed projects.
awardAmountMinnumberKeeps records with an award amount at or above this value in US dollars.

awardNoticeDateFromstring (date)Sets the first date in the award-notice date window, in YYYY-MM-DD form.
awardNoticeDateTostring (date)Sets the last date in the award-notice date window, in YYYY-MM-DD form.
maxItemsintegerActor Work Limit. Stops after this many records. Leave it empty to return all available records until the source is exhausted.

Default input example

This small topic search is a useful starting point:

{
"searchMethod": "topic",
"topic": "cancer",
"projectStatus": "active_only",
"maxItems": 100
}

The maxItems field is the Actor Work Limit. Leaving it empty returns all available records until the NIH RePORTER source is exhausted.

"abstract": "PROJECT SUMMARY\nThe overall goal of the Lung Cancer (LC) Program is to improve lung cancer patient survival by optimizing early\ndetection strategies and developing novel therapeutic approaches for patients with late-stage disease, including\nfor small cell lung cancer patients. The fact that the number of deaths attributable to lung cancer in the US has\ndeclined from 190,000 to 130,000 over the preceding decades provides reason for optimism on two fronts:\nsubstantial reductions in cigarette smoke consumption, particularly in the US, have led to a decrease in the\nnumber of lung cancer diagnoses; and five-year survival rates broke 20% for the first time for lung cancer\npatients, strongly suggesting that novel treatments are meaningfully impacting the disease. Despite these\nimprovements in incidence and survival rates, these metrics compare very poorly to almost all other cancer\ntypes. Underlying these dismal statistics reside two fundamental issues. First, our ability to identify lung cancer\nat early states remains flawed, despite the introduction of legitimate screening practices. Second, our therapeutic\nstrategies for patients diagnosed at an advanced stage continue to leave much to be desired. These two\nfundamental shortcomings must be addressed to produce a meaningful improvement in lung cancer patient\noutcomes. Research from the program also addresses critical deficiencies in lung cancer care available to\npatients residing within our catchment area. The LC Program has three specific aims to: 1) improve the efficacy\nof immune based therapies for lung cancer patients, 2) implement effective strategies for lung cancer screening\nand early detection, and 3) identify and exploit therapeutic vulnerabilities in SCLC. The program is a new program\nfor this Cancer Center Support Grant renewal and is led by a team spanning many aspects of lung cancer\nresearch including basic, translational, population science, and clinical research in both non-small cell lung\ncancer small cell lung cancer, as well as clinical expertise in thoracic oncology and pulmonary medicine. The\nprogram is comprised of 34 members from Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and the University of Washington,\nthe majority having dual appointments and bringing expertise in a diverse array of both lung cancer science and\nlung cancer clinical care. Members hold $9.8M in research funding, including an NCI P50 Lung SPORE. The LC\nprogram is a highly collaborative group; 19% of the 73 publications in the most recent 12-month reporting year\nwere intraprogrammatic and 33% were interprogrammatic. Twenty-two percent were in journals with impact\nfactors >10. Members are also actively engaged in national networks and cooperative groups.",

💳 Pricing

Charged event

The Actor uses pay-per-event pricing. It charges $0.0018 for each project or award saved to the dataset. The charge applies only when a project or award is saved, so a search with no saved row does not trigger this event.

🔌 Integrations

Read the results link to open the dataset view, or use the Apify API to fetch saved rows in another workflow.

❓ FAQ

Can I look up one project number?

Yes. Choose the project number search method, enter one NIH project number, and run the Actor. The row includes the direct source page when NIH publishes it.

Can I search by several investigator or organization names?

Yes. Add one simple list of investigator names or one simple list of recipient organization names, then choose the matching search method. Do not mix the two list types in one search.

What happens if I leave Maximum records empty?

The Actor returns all available records until the NIH RePORTER source is exhausted. Set a number when you want to stop after a smaller number of records.

Why is a field missing from a row?

NIH RePORTER may not publish every optional field for every project. The Actor keeps source-missing values unavailable instead of filling them in.

Does this include publications or patents?

No. This Actor focuses on NIH RePORTER project and award records, including source-published abstracts. Publication, patent, subaward, and full-text article retrieval are outside its scope.
