Website to Markdown Converter: clean page text for AI, search and notes

$1 per 1,000 pages. Platform usage included. No rental, no minimum.

Give it web page addresses and get one row per page with the page turned into clean Markdown: headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, code blocks and links are kept, while menus, footers, sidebars and cookie notices are dropped. It reads plain HTML over HTTP, with no browser. It can also follow links on the same site to convert a whole documentation section.

Open it in Apify Console

New to Apify? [Create a free account](https://www.apify.com?fpr=ymnoit) (referral link). Runs from a free plan account return the first 10 results; any paid plan returns everything you ask for, up to your limit.

What it costs

PagesPrice
1,000$1.00
10,000$10.00
100,000$100.00

Plus $0.001 per run. One flat price, platform usage included, so there is no separate compute or proxy bill. A daily run of 300 pages costs about $0.30, or about $9 a month.

Why use it

  • One flat price. The bill follows the number of pages and nothing else. There is no browser or proxy behind it.
  • Structure kept, clutter dropped. Headings, lists, GitHub style tables, fenced code blocks with their language, bold, italic and links come through. Each row also has a headings outline you can use to split text into chunks.
  • A crawl when you need one. Set maxDepth to follow links on the same website, stay inside the start folder (for example one documentation section), and cap the pages per start address.
  • Empty pages are not charged. A page that has no readable text in its HTML, or that returns an error, gives no row. It is listed in the run summary with the reason.

Quick start

  1. Open the actor, add one page address per line, press Start.
  2. Or paste this input:
{ "urls": ["https://docs.apify.com/platform/actors"], "maxItems": 10 }
  1. Download the results as JSON, CSV or Excel, or read them through the API.

Use it from code

curl -X POST "https://api.apify.com/v2/acts/one_dollar_store~website-to-markdown-converter/run-sync-get-dataset-items?token=YOUR_APIFY_TOKEN" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"urls": ["https://docs.apify.com/platform/actors"], "maxItems": 10}'
from apify_client import ApifyClient
client = ApifyClient("YOUR_APIFY_TOKEN")
run = client.actor("one_dollar_store/website-to-markdown-converter").call(
run_input={"urls": ["https://docs.apify.com/platform/actors"], "maxItems": 10}
)
for item in client.dataset(run["defaultDatasetId"]).iterate_items():
print(item["title"], item["wordCount"])
print(item["markdown"][:300])

Use it from an AI assistant

Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other assistants can call this actor through Apify's MCP server. Add it with this server address:

https://mcp.apify.com?tools=one_dollar_store/website-to-markdown-converter

Then ask, for example: "Convert this documentation page to Markdown and summarise the main points."

Switching from another website to Markdown actor

Most of these actors take start URLs, a crawl depth and a page limit. Here they are urls, maxDepth, maxPagesPerStartUrl and maxItems. The core fields are url, title and markdown.

Input

FieldTypeDefaultWhat it does
urlslist of textnonePage addresses to convert, one per line.
maxDepthnumber00 converts only the pages you list. 1 also converts pages they link to on the same website, up to 5.
maxPagesPerStartUrlnumber20When links are followed, the most pages per address you listed.
stayInFoldertrue or falsetrueWhen links are followed, stay inside the folder of the start address. Turn off to follow any page on the site.
mainContentOnlytrue or falsetrueDrop menus, footers, sidebars, cookie notices and forms. Turn off to convert the whole page.
includeLinkstrue or falsetrueWrite links as Markdown links. When off, only the link text is kept.
includeImagestrue or falsefalseWrite images as Markdown with their alt text.
maxItemsnumber100The run stops after this many pages in total. Minimum 10.

A bare domain such as example.com is tried over https first, then http. Tracking parameters such as utm_source are removed from followed links, and a page reached twice is returned once.

Example crawl of one documentation section:

{
"urls": ["https://docs.apify.com/platform/actors"],
"maxDepth": 1,
"maxPagesPerStartUrl": 30,
"maxItems": 30
}

Limits

  • No JavaScript is run. The actor reads the HTML the server sends. A page that builds its text with scripts (many single page apps) can come back with little or no text. Such a page gives no row and is listed in the run summary.
  • Main content is a best guess. With mainContentOnly on, the actor keeps the main or article part of the page, or else the block with the most paragraph text, and drops navigation, footers, sidebars, cookie notices and long lists of short links. Odd layouts can lose a section or keep some clutter. Turn the option off to get the whole page.
  • robots.txt is honoured for every page. A page it does not allow gives no row. If robots.txt cannot be read because of a server error, the page is skipped too.
  • Sites that block cloud servers or show a bot check page are skipped. The actor does not try to get past a check.
  • Only HTML pages with a 2xx status give a row. PDFs and other files are skipped. Redirects are followed, up to 5. Pages are read up to 2 MB.
  • Crawling follows links on the same website only, up to depth 5, and uses a short pause between requests on one site. Links in menus and footers are followed too, so set a page limit.
  • Tables are written as simple Markdown tables. Merged cells, nested tables and complex layouts are flattened.
  • Free plan runs return the first 10 results.
  • Every run writes a RUN_SUMMARY record with counts and the list of skipped pages and why.

FAQ

How much does it cost to convert 10,000 pages? $10, plus $0.001 for each run.

Do I pay for compute or proxy on top? No. Platform usage is included in the $1 per 1,000 price. The actor uses no proxy.

Can I use the output for AI or RAG? Yes. Each row has clean Markdown, a title, a word count and a heading outline, which you can use to split a page into chunks.

Why did a page give no row? The run summary lists every skipped page with the reason: blocked by robots.txt, an error status, a bot check page, a file that is not HTML, or a page with no text in its HTML.

Does it read pages that need a login? No. It reads public pages only, as a visitor who is not logged in.

Is it legal? The actor reads public pages that a site sends to any visitor, with no login, and respects robots.txt. How you use the text is up to you: follow each site's terms, copyright and the law where you live. Do not republish content you do not have rights to.

Is this an official product of the sites it reads? No. It is an independent tool and is not affiliated with or endorsed by any site.

Do I need an Apify account? Yes. Actors run from an Apify account, and a free account is enough to start: it includes $5 of platform usage every month. You can sign up here. This is a referral link and it costs you nothing.

Is there a limit on the free plan? Yes. A run started from a free plan account delivers the first 10 results, then ends with a message and a link to the plans. Any paid plan returns everything you ask for, up to your own limit. The price per result is the same on every plan.
