The platform began on 9 September 2009 under the name eBay Kleinanzeigen, evolving out of eBay’s earlier classifieds brand Kijiji in Germany. From launch it rapidly gained popularity as a free and simple local marketplace for private sales.

A major turning point came in June 2021, when eBay sold its global classifieds division — including the German site eBay Kleinanzeigen and car-listing site mobile.de — to the Norwegian online-classifieds group Adevinta in a US $9.2 billion deal. As part of this transaction, eBay received US $2.5 billion in cash plus Adevinta shares valued around US $6.7 billion, making eBay the largest shareholder in Adevinta after the sale.

Following the acquisition, the business continued to grow and develop. In May 2023 the company rebranded from “eBay Kleinanzeigen” to simply “Kleinanzeigen” with a new name and identity, reflecting its independence of the eBay brand while remaining part of Adevinta’s global classifieds portfolio.
