When scraping data or browsing anonymously, proxies are essential. They act as intermediaries, masking your original IP address and allowing you to send requests from another location.

Why Use Proxies?

• Avoid IP Blocks: By routing requests through proxies, you prevent the target website from recognizing your IP as a scraper or spammer.
• Access Geo-restricted Content: Proxies let you access content or websites restricted by location.
• Enhance Anonymity: Hide your actual IP, ensuring privacy while scraping or browsing.

Types of Proxies

1. Residential Proxies
   • Real IP addresses provided by ISPs to home users.
   • They mimic regular users, making them harder to detect.
   • Best for: Long-term, undetectable scraping, and avoiding blocks.
2. Data Center Proxies
   • IP addresses from servers in data centers.
   • Faster and cheaper than residential proxies but easier to detect and block.
   • Best for: High-speed scraping, but with a higher risk of detection.
3. Mobile Proxies
   • IPs provided by mobile carriers (3G/4G/5G networks).
   • Very difficult to detect, as they appear as regular mobile users.

Rotating Proxies vs. Straight Proxies

• Rotating Proxies: Every request you send goes through a different proxy, making it harder for websites to detect patterns.
• Straight Proxies: All requests are sent through the same proxy, making it easier to track your IP.

FAQs & Troubleshooting

Q: What counts as a paid result?

Three events: dataset-item (every company record, $1.00/1,000), company-details (each enriched profile when scrapeCompanyDetails is true, $1.50/1,000), and review (each review when scrapeReviews is true, $1.50/1,000). Reviews are billed per review, not per company. If you set a spending limit, the run stops when that limit is reached. You do not pay extra Apify platform usage on top of these events.

Q: Do I need search queries, categories, or URLs?

Provide at least one of searchQueries, categoryIds, or startUrls. Use search terms when you do not have a URL (for example Clothing store in United States). Use categoryIds for slugs such as cats_dogs or a category page URL. Use startUrls for a copied search, category, or company review page such as https://www.trustpilot.com/review/sportdecals.com. Combining sources is supported.

Q: How do I scrape every review instead of five?

Set scrapeReviews to true and set maxReviews to 0. The default maxReviews is 5 so a large category crawl does not charge thousands of review events by accident.

Q: Why am I getting empty results or access errors?

Trustpilot often blocks datacenter IPs. Keep proxyConfiguration on Apify RESIDENTIAL proxies (the default) and match country to the market you want (for example US or GB). Retry the run if a page returns an interstitial.

Q: How do I download the data as CSV or Excel?

Open the finished run, go to the Output / Storage tab, and export the default dataset as JSON, CSV, Excel, HTML, or XML. Reviews stay nested on each company; flatten them in a spreadsheet or script if you need one row per review.

Q: Why are some emails or phones empty even with details enabled?

Not every Trustpilot profile publishes an email or phone. The actor still charges company-details when it opens the profile, and it keeps listing fields (name, TrustScore, URL) even if a contact field is missing.
