Check bag, wallet, shoe and belt listings for leather wording the FTC Leather Guides (16 CFR Part 24) warn about. The Leather Claim Checker flags 'genuine leather' or 'leather' next to PU, vinyl or microfiber, bonded leather without the leather fiber percentage, croc or snake embossed finishes that don't name the real leather, genuine exotic skin claims on embossed leather, vegan leather with no material and 'waterproof' or 'scratchproof' claims. Works on Amazon, Etsy, eBay, Zalando and Shopify scraper output. Click Start with the prefilled example to see it work.

This is an automated screen of listing text, not a legal determination. It can't test materials or see photos, and the FTC Guides are guidance on what the FTC may treat as deceptive. A clean result doesn't mean a listing is accurate. Not legal advice; every row carries this disclaimer and a timestamp.

What does the Leather Claim Checker do?

  • ✅ Leather with non-leather materials: 'leather' or 'genuine leather' while the material field or text says PU, polyurethane, vinyl, PVC, microfiber or synthetic (16 CFR 24.2(a), (e)). Soles, linings and hardware are ignored.
  • ✅ Bonded, reconstituted or shredded leather without the percentage of leather fibers (16 CFR 24.2(f)).
  • ✅ Embossed or printed finishes (croc, snake, ostrich) that don't name the actual leather, and 'genuine crocodile' on embossed leather (16 CFR 24.2(b)).
  • ✅ Vegan or plant-based leather with no material stated (16 CFR 24.2(a)).
  • ✅ Absolute claims like 'waterproof', 'scuffproof' or 'scratchproof' (16 CFR 24.3).
  • ✅ Products outside the Part 24 item list (sofas, jackets, car seats) get low-severity notes only, marked inScope: false.
  • ✅ Output per row: leatherClaims, nonLeatherMaterials, inScope, riskLevel, issueCount, issues (ruleId, severity, message, quote, sourceUrl, fixHint), checkedAt and a disclaimer.

Who is it for?

  • Fashion and accessories sellers on Amazon, Etsy and Shopify checking product copy.
  • Marketplaces and retailers screening supplier listings in bulk.
  • Agencies and compliance teams auditing client catalogs.
  • Researchers and animal-welfare groups measuring leather mislabeling.

How to check leather claims in product listings

  1. Click Start with the prefilled example (a 'genuine leather' bag made of PU, a bonded leather belt, a croc embossed tote and clean full grain boots).
  2. Replace the input with your own: title, description and optional material and category.
  3. Or enter a Dataset ID from an Amazon, Etsy, eBay, Zalando, SHEIN or Shopify scraper. Common fields are detected automatically; use Field map for nested ones.
  4. Turn on Only save rows with findings to skip clean rows; you only pay for saved rows.
  5. Export results as CSV, Excel or JSON, or fetch them through the API.

How much does it cost to check leather claims?

This Actor uses pay-per-event pricing: $0.002 per product saved plus a $0.00005 start fee per run, plus small platform usage paid by you (a few hundredths of a cent for small runs). That's about $2.00 for 1,000 products and $20.00 for 10,000 plus usage. With Only save rows with findings on, rows without findings aren't saved or charged. You can set a maximum cost per run in the run options.

Use it through the API, integrations or AI agents

  • Run it and get results in one call: https://api.apify.com/v2/acts/ultimatemc~leather-claim-checker/run-sync-get-dataset-items
  • Use it from AI agents through the Apify MCP server: https://mcp.apify.com?tools=ultimatemc/leather-claim-checker
  • Schedule it after a daily scraper run, send flagged rows to Slack or email with webhooks, or connect it to Make, Zapier, n8n or Google Sheets.
  • Chain it after any product scraper by passing the scraper's dataset ID.

How it works

Checks are deterministic text rules written from the FTC Guides for Select Leather and Imitation Leather Products (16 CFR Part 24) as published on eCFR, checked on 2026-11-03. Each finding names the section and links it. No AI and no external calls.

FAQ

Is 'PU leather' or 'faux leather' flagged?

No. Those terms disclose that the material isn't leather. The checker flags unqualified 'leather' when the listing also shows non-leather material.

What does bonded leather need?

If terms like 'bonded leather' are used, the Guides call for the percentage of leather fibers and non-leather substances, e.g. 'Bonded Leather Containing 60% Leather Fibers and 40% Non-leather Substances'.

Does it cover furniture or jackets?

Part 24 lists bags, cases, wallets, footwear, belts and similar items. Other products are screened with low-severity notes only.

Is it AI?

No. It's a fixed set of rules, so the same input always gives the same result.

Limitations

  • Text and fields only; materials can't be tested.
  • Rules work best on English listings.
  • Footwear part-by-part disclosure is only partly checked.
