Organic Claim Checker: USDA & EU Organic Labels

Check food listings for organic claim problems: USDA seal on 'made with organic', organic percentage below 95% or 70%, non-organic ingredients in '100% organic', 'organic water' or salt, missing certifier, and EU control body code and logo gaps. Skips organic cotton, SEO and OLED. Sources cited.

Check organic food claims against the USDA National Organic Program (7 CFR 205) and the EU organic regulation 2018/848 labelling rules. The Organic Claim Checker reads titles, labels, descriptions and ingredients and flags the USDA seal on 'made with organic' products, organic percentages below 100%, 95% or 70% for the claim used, water or salt labelled organic, missing certifier statements, EU organic products without a control body code or origin indication, and more. It skips false friends like organic cotton, organic traffic and OLED. Click Start with the prefilled example to see it work.

This is an automated screen of label and listing text, not a legal determination. It can't verify certification or see seals in images. A clean result doesn't mean a product or claim is certified or allowed. Not legal advice; every row carries this disclaimer and a timestamp.

What does the Organic Claim Checker do?

  • ✅ USDA seal on 'made with organic' products (high), which may not use the seal (7 CFR 205.311).
  • ✅ Percent checks: '100% organic', 'organic' (95%+) and 'made with organic' (70%+) against a stated organic percentage.
  • ✅ Ingredient checks: non-organic ingredients in '100% organic' products, and water or salt marked organic.
  • ✅ Certifier not shown for US organic claims ('Certified organic by ...').
  • ✅ EU checks: organic share below 95%, missing control body code (e.g. DE-ÖKO-006) and missing EU/non-EU origin indication; EU logo not mentioned as info.
  • ✅ False friends skipped: organic cotton, organic traffic or growth, OLED, bio-based, Bio-Oil and inorganic.
  • ✅ Output per row: market, claimCategory, organicPercent, sealMentioned, certifier, controlBodyCode, riskLevel, issueCount, issues (ruleId, severity, message, quote, sourceUrl, fixHint), checkedAt and a disclaimer.

Who is it for?

  • Food brands and co-packers checking product pages and labels.
  • Grocery e-commerce and marketplace teams screening organic claims across SKUs.
  • Certifiers and consultants pre-checking client listings.
  • Researchers and consumer groups studying organic labelling online.

How to check organic claims on food listings

  1. Click Start with the prefilled example (a clean USDA organic soup, a 'made with organic' granola mentioning the seal, a broth with organic water and salt, and an EU 'Bio' product with no control code).
  2. Replace the input with your own: title, claims, description, labelText, ingredients, optional certifier and market.
  3. Or enter a Dataset ID from an Open Food Facts, Amazon, iHerb, Walmart or other grocery scraper. Common fields are detected automatically; use Field map for nested ones.
  4. Turn on Only save rows with findings to skip clean rows; you only pay for saved rows.
  5. Export results as CSV, Excel or JSON, or fetch them through the API.

How much does it cost to check organic claims?

This Actor uses pay-per-event pricing: $0.002 per product saved plus a $0.00005 start fee per run, plus small platform usage paid by you (a few hundredths of a cent for small runs). That's about $2.00 for 1,000 products and $20.00 for 10,000 plus usage. With Only save rows with findings on, rows without findings aren't saved or charged. You can set a maximum cost per run in the run options.

Use it through the API, integrations or AI agents

  • Run it and get results in one call: https://api.apify.com/v2/acts/ultimatemc~organic-claim-checker/run-sync-get-dataset-items
  • Use it from AI agents through the Apify MCP server: https://mcp.apify.com?tools=ultimatemc/organic-claim-checker
  • Schedule it after a daily scraper run, send flagged rows to Slack or email with webhooks, or connect it to Make, Zapier, n8n or Google Sheets.
  • Chain it after any grocery scraper by passing the scraper's dataset ID.

How it works

Claims are classified into the USDA categories (100% organic, organic, made with organic, specific ingredients) or EU organic terms (organic, bio, öko, biologique, biológico). Rules were written from 7 CFR 205.301-205.311 and Regulation (EU) 2018/848 Art. 30-33, checked on 2026-11-02. No AI and no external calls.

FAQ

Can 'made with organic' products use the USDA seal?

No. Only '100 percent organic' and 'organic' products may use the seal.

Why is organic water flagged?

Water and salt can't be counted or labelled as organic ingredients under the NOP.

Does it verify certification?

No. It checks whether a certifier or control body code is stated, not whether it's valid.

Is organic cotton flagged?

No. Non-food uses of 'organic' are skipped.

Is it AI?

No. It's a fixed set of rules, so the same input always gives the same result.

Limitations

  • Text only; seals and logos in images aren't seen.
  • Certification isn't verified against the USDA Organic Integrity Database or EU registers.
  • Non-food organic products (textiles, cosmetics) aren't covered.
