Search official Food Standards Agency (FSA) food hygiene ratings for restaurants, takeaways, cafes, pubs, hotels, supermarkets and other food businesses in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland. You can search by business name, address or postcode, and local authority, and filter by business type and rating. Each row includes the hygiene rating (0-5, or Pass/Improvement Required in Scotland), the inspection date, the hygiene, structural and management scores, the address, postcode, coordinates, the local authority and a link to the official FSA page. Phone numbers and email addresses are not returned. No login, no API key.

Who is it for?

  • Food delivery, review and listing sites that show hygiene badges.
  • B2B sales teams selling to restaurants and food shops, building lead lists by area and type.
  • Investors, franchisors and landlords checking sites before deals.
  • Journalists and councils reporting on low-rated businesses.

How to use it

  1. Enter business names (for example pizza or Greggs), or leave the list empty to list every business in an area.
  2. Add an address or postcode (for example London or SE1) and/or a local authority (for example Southwark).
  3. Optionally filter by business type (Restaurant, Takeaway, Pub, Retailer) and ratings (for example 0, 1, 2).
  4. Set Max results per search and click Start.

Input example

{"businessNames": [], "localAuthority": "Southwark", "businessType": "Takeaway", "ratings": ["0", "1", "2"], "maxResultsPerSearch": 500}

Output example

{"fhrsId": 1158712, "businessName": "Pizza pilgrims", "businessType": "Restaurant/Cafe/Canteen", "rating": 5, "ratingDate": "2024-09-04", "hygieneScore": 5, "structuralScore": 5, "confidenceInManagementScore": 5, "address": "London Bridge Station, 2, Bermondsey Street, London", "postcode": "SE1 2ER", "localAuthority": "Southwark", "url": "https://ratings.food.gov.uk/business/1158712"}

How much does it cost?

Pay-per-event: a small fee per business returned, plus a tiny per-run start fee. There is no subscription and no separate platform usage cost. For example, 1,000 businesses cost about $1. Searches with no matches and error rows are not charged. Set Max results per search or Maximum cost per run to cap your spending.

Use it through the API, integrations or AI agents

Run it from the Apify API, on a schedule, or connect it to Make, Zapier, n8n or Google Sheets. AI agents can find and call it through the Apify MCP server. Output is clean JSON with the same fields on every run.

FAQ

Is it legal? Yes. The FSA publishes ratings through its public API under the Open Government Licence v3.0, which allows commercial reuse with attribution ("Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0"). The tool leaves out phone numbers and council email addresses.

What do the scores mean? Lower scores are better. Hygiene and structural scores go from 0 to 25, and confidence in management goes from 0 to 30. The overall rating runs from 0 (urgent improvement needed) to 5 (very good).

What is "AwaitingInspection"? The business is registered but has not been rated yet. Filter it out with the ratings field if you only want rated businesses.

How fresh is the data? The FSA updates ratings daily as councils upload inspection results.

Why is Scotland different? Scotland uses the Food Hygiene Information Scheme (Pass, Improvement Required, Exempt) instead of the 0-5 scale. The ratingScheme field shows FHIS or FHRS.
