What is Press Release Monitor?

Press Release Monitor is an Apify Actor that reads the public RSS feeds of PR Newswire, Business Wire and GlobeNewswire and returns one clean row per press release — title, company, publish date, category and a plain-text summary. Point it at a list of keywords (funding, acquisition, new CEO, your competitor's name) and it filters the wires down to only the releases that mention them, so you get a sales-trigger or competitor-monitoring feed without writing a single scraper. Everything comes straight from each wire's own RSS output — no HTML parsing of the news site, no anti-bot wall, no API key — which also means it runs cleanly on an Apify schedule with a webhook into Slack, email or a CRM every time something new matches.

What data does Press Release Monitor extract?

Press Release Monitor extracts 12 fields per release:

FieldTypeDescription
sourcestringWhich wire the release came from: prnewswire, businesswire or globenewswire
titlestringRelease headline, entities decoded
urlstringCanonical link to the release on the wire's own site
publishedAtstring (ISO date)Publish date/time
summarystringFeed description with HTML stripped, up to 1,000 characters
companystringHeuristic company name — see "How the company field works" below
categoriesarrayValues from the feed's own <category> tags, when the wire publishes any
matchedKeywordsarrayWhich of your input keywords were found in the title or summary
bodystringUp to 8,000 characters of the release's full text — only when Fetch full release text is on
guidstringThe feed's own unique identifier for the release
errorstringSet only on a row that represents a wire whose feed could not be read
scrapedAtstring (ISO date)When this run read the feed

How to use Press Release Monitor

  1. Leave Wire sources at all three, or narrow it to the wire(s) you care about.
  2. Add Keywords such as funding, acquisition, partnership, or a competitor's name — leave it empty to keep every release currently in the feeds.
  3. Optionally set Only releases from the last N hours (e.g. 24) so a daily schedule only ever returns what's new.
  4. Click Start, then export the results as JSON, CSV, Excel or HTML, or wire the run into a schedule + webhook for a standing alert feed.

Pricing

Press Release Monitor uses pay-per-event pricing: $0.001 per release row, i.e. $1 per 1,000 releases, plus a negligible actor-start fee. Each of the three feeds is a single small RSS request, so a default run across all three wires costs a fraction of a cent even before any keyword filtering. Set Maximum cost per run and the Actor trims the collected releases (newest first) to what the budget covers instead of overspending.

Press Release Monitor vs. manual wire-watching

Checking PR Newswire, Business Wire and GlobeNewswire by hand means three browser tabs, no keyword alerting, and no structured export. Google Alerts is close but indexes with a delay and gives you an email, not a dataset. This Actor reads all three wires' own RSS feeds directly, returns a flat table with company and category already extracted, dedupes overlapping stories by URL, and runs on a schedule so a new "Series B" or "acquires" release from any of the three wires lands in your dataset (and webhook) within minutes of publication.

Using Press Release Monitor with AI agents and MCP

Press Release Monitor is pay-per-event with limited permissions — the two requirements for an Actor to be callable through the Apify MCP server at mcp.apify.com. An agent passes keywords and gets back a structured list of matching releases, ready to summarize into a sales brief, competitor digest or investor update. The same run works from n8n, Make, Zapier and LangChain through Apify's integrations, and the sinceHours filter makes it safe to call on a repeating schedule without re-processing the same releases (results are also deduped by URL within a single run).

FAQ

How does the "company" field work? It is a heuristic, not a named-entity extractor: it takes the text of the title before the first of " Announces", " Reports", " Launches" or a comma, and falls back to the feed's own creator/contributor field when the title has none of those markers. It works well for typical "Acme Corp Announces X" headlines but can misfire on titles that aren't shaped that way — for example a securities-lawsuit notice whose company-sounding fragment isn't the actual filer (the dc:contributor/dc:creator field, when present, is usually more reliable for those cases and is used automatically as the fallback).

Why is categories usually empty for PR Newswire and Business Wire? Both wires' RSS feeds don't publish a <category> tag on releases (PR Newswire tags industry codes under different, code-only fields; Business Wire tags none at all). GlobeNewswire's <category> tags happen to carry stock ticker and ISIN codes rather than topic names — that is what the field is, wired through as-is, not invented.

Why is body always null for Business Wire? businesswire.com returns HTTP 403 to non-browser requests even on its homepage, so the Actor never attempts to fetch a Business Wire release page. includeBody only fetches PR Newswire and GlobeNewswire pages, both verified to answer a plain fetch() with the real HTML.

Is this the full wire archive? No — each RSS feed only ever contains the wire's most recent ~20-50 releases (PR Newswire and GlobeNewswire cap at 20; the Business Wire topic feed used here typically has 30-50). This Actor is a live monitor, not a historical search tool; run it on a schedule to build a history over time.

Is this legal to run? Yes. RSS feeds are published by each wire specifically for automated consumption, and no personal data is collected.

Can I export to CSV or Excel? Yes, from the Output tab or the API, with ready-made Overview and Full detail views.
