Get official U.S. federal disaster declarations from the OpenFEMA API. That includes major disasters (DR), emergencies (EM) and fire management declarations (FM) for every state, territory and tribal nation since 1953. You can filter by state, incident type (hurricane, flood, fire, severe storm, tornado, winter storm and more), declaration type, date and county. Choose one row per disaster, with its list of designated counties, or one row per county. Each row shows the title, incident dates, programs declared (individual assistance, public assistance, hazard mitigation) and, optionally, FEMA aid totals: households approved, individual and household aid approved, and public assistance and hazard mitigation obligated. No login or API key is needed.

Who is it for?

  • Insurers, lenders and real estate analysts assessing disaster history by county.
  • Contractors, restoration companies and suppliers finding newly declared disaster areas.
  • Emergency managers, NGOs and researchers studying disaster trends and aid.
  • Journalists covering new declarations and federal spending.

How to use it

  1. Optionally choose states, incident types and declaration types.
  2. Set Declared in last N days (the default is 365) or a start and end date.
  3. Choose one row per disaster or one row per county/area. You can also filter counties by name.
  4. Keep Include FEMA aid totals on to add the dollar amounts, then click Start.

Input example

{"states": ["FL", "TX"], "incidentTypes": ["Hurricane"], "startDate": "2024-01-01", "groupBy": "county", "countyContains": "Harris"}

Output example

{"femaDeclarationId": "DR-4798-TX", "declarationTitle": "HURRICANE BERYL", "incidentType": "Hurricane", "state": "TX", "declarationDate": "2024-07-09", "designatedArea": "Harris (County)", "householdsApprovedIA": 740058, "individualHouseholdAidApproved": 935231312.2, "url": "https://www.fema.gov/disaster/4798"}

How much does it cost?

Pay-per-event: a small fee per declaration row returned, plus a tiny per-run start fee. There is no subscription and no separate platform usage cost. For example, 1,000 rows cost about $0.50. Searches with no matches and error rows are not charged. Use Max results or Maximum cost per run to cap your spending.

Use it through the API, integrations or AI agents

Run it from the Apify API, on a schedule, or connect it to Make, Zapier, n8n or Google Sheets. AI agents can find and call it through the Apify MCP server. Output is clean JSON with the same fields on every run.

FAQ

Is it legal? Yes. OpenFEMA data is U.S. government public domain data published for reuse. It is not personal data. FEMA asks that its data not be presented as FEMA-endorsed.

How fresh is it? OpenFEMA refreshes declarations several times a day, so new declarations usually show up the same day.

Why are aid totals empty for some disasters? New disasters, emergencies (EM) and fire declarations often have no individual assistance, and totals appear only after FEMA loads them.

What is the difference between the row modes? "One row per disaster" combines all counties of a disaster into a list. "One row per county" gives each designated area its own row, with FIPS codes for mapping.
