Search U.S. EPA-regulated facilities in the official ECHO (Enforcement and Compliance History Online) database. That includes factories, refineries, power plants, chemical plants, wastewater plants, hazardous waste handlers and public water systems. You can search by state, city, ZIP code, facility name and NAICS industry code. You can also filter by program (Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, RCRA hazardous waste, Safe Drinking Water Act), current violations, significant violators and minimum penalties. Each row includes the EPA registry ID, name, address, coordinates, industry codes, programs, overall and per-program compliance status, quarters in noncompliance, 5-year inspection count and last inspection date, formal and informal enforcement actions, 5-year penalties and the last penalty, permit IDs (air, water, RCRA, TRI, GHG), and a link to the EPA Detailed Facility Report. No login or API key is needed.

Who is it for?

  • Environmental, ESG and supply-chain risk teams screening suppliers and sites.
  • Real estate, lending and due-diligence firms checking nearby compliance history.
  • Environmental consultants, labs and remediation firms finding facilities with violations (B2B leads).
  • Journalists, NGOs and researchers tracking polluters and enforcement.

How to use it

  1. Enter a state (the default is TX) and optionally a city (the default is Houston), ZIP codes, a facility name or a NAICS code.
  2. Optionally choose programs, and turn on only facilities with current violations or only significant violators.
  3. Optionally set minimum penalties and Max results, then click Start.

Input example

{"state": "LA", "naicsCode": "325", "onlyWithViolations": true, "minTotalPenalties": 10000, "maxResults": 500}

Output example

{"registryId": "110000619723", "facilityName": "ASHLAND CHEMICAL", "city": "HOUSTON", "state": "TX", "programs": ["air", "water", "hazardous-waste"], "complianceStatus": "Significant Violation", "quartersInNoncompliance": 11, "penalties5yrUsd": 55338.0, "lastPenaltyDate": "2026-07-07", "reportUrl": "https://echo.epa.gov/detailed-facility-report?fid=110000619723"}

How much does it cost?

Pay-per-event: a small fee per facility returned, plus a tiny per-run start fee. There is no subscription and no separate platform usage cost. For example, 1,000 facilities cost about $1. Searches with no matches and error rows are not charged. Use Max results or Maximum cost per run to cap your spending.

Use it through the API, integrations or AI agents

Run it from the Apify API, on a schedule, or connect it to Make, Zapier, n8n or Google Sheets. AI agents can find and call it through the Apify MCP server. Output is clean JSON with the same fields on every run.

FAQ

Is it legal? Yes. ECHO is published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through public web services for reuse. It is government data about regulated facilities. The tool does not return contact names, emails or phone numbers.

How fresh is the data? EPA refreshes ECHO weekly from its program databases. Some state-run programs report with a delay.

Does "Violation Identified" mean a fine was issued? No. It means EPA or a state found a violation in recent quarters. Penalties and formal actions are separate fields.

Why are some searches slow? Large cities can have thousands of facilities. EPA ECHO prepares the result set first, then the tool downloads it 1,000 rows at a time.
