Search NIH-funded research projects from the official NIH RePORTER API, which is public and needs no key. Each row has the project title, project number, fiscal year, award amount with direct and indirect costs, the organization (university, hospital, company) with city, state, country, type and congressional district, the funding institute (NCI, NIA, NIAID, NHLBI and more), activity code (R01, R21, U01, SBIR R43/R44 and more), funding mechanism, CFDA code, funding opportunity, project and budget dates, award notice date, study section, key research terms and, optionally, the abstract. You can filter by topic, fiscal year, state, organization, institute, activity code and minimum award. No login is needed.

Who is it for?

  • Life-science sales and business development teams finding labs and institutions with fresh funding for a research area.
  • Grant writers and research offices benchmarking awards and finding funding opportunities and study sections.
  • Investors and analysts following SBIR/STTR awards to biotech startups.
  • Journalists and policy researchers analyzing where federal health research money goes.

How to use it

  1. Enter search terms (the default is alzheimer). They are matched against titles, terms and abstracts.
  2. Optionally set fiscal years (the default is the current and previous year), states, organizations, institutes or activity codes.
  3. Choose a sort order (the largest awards come first by default), set Max results per search term and click Start.

Input example

{"searchTerms": ["CRISPR"], "fiscalYears": ["2026"], "orgStates": ["MA", "CA"], "activityCodes": ["R01"], "includeAbstracts": true, "maxResultsPerSearch": 500}

Output example

{"applId": 11412481, "projectNumber": "5U19AG078109-05", "title": "The Health & Aging Brain Study - Health Disparities (HABS-HD)", "fiscalYear": 2026, "awardAmount": 32984606, "organization": "UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS HLTH SCI CTR", "orgState": "TX", "instituteAbbr": "NIA", "activityCode": "U19", "projectStart": "2022-09-30", "url": "https://reporter.nih.gov/project-details/11412481"}

How much does it cost?

Pay-per-event: a small fee per project returned, plus a tiny per-run start fee. There is no subscription and no separate platform usage cost. For example, 1,000 projects cost about $0.50. Searches with no matches and error rows are not charged. Use Max results per search term or Maximum cost per run to cap your spending.

Use it through the API, integrations or AI agents

Run it from the Apify API, on a schedule, or connect it to Make, Zapier, n8n or Google Sheets. AI agents can find and call it through the Apify MCP server. Output is clean JSON with the same fields on every run.

FAQ

Is it legal? Yes. NIH RePORTER is a public U.S. government database, and its API is offered for public use. The tool follows NIH's guidance of about one request per second. To avoid personal data, investigator and program officer names are not included. Each row links to the official project page.

How fresh is it? RePORTER is updated weekly with new awards.

Why does a project appear more than once? Multi-year projects have one record per fiscal year, each with that year's award amount.

What is the maximum? RePORTER returns up to 15,000 projects per search. Narrow by year or state for larger pulls.
