Why choose this actor?

Copying opening hours and ticket prices from Chinese-only pages, one sight at a time, to build an itinerary? Getting a pin and an address from a maps tool when you needed to know what the place costs and what travelers think of it? Holding a list of Mafengwo place IDs and no tool that reads them?

• 86 filled fields per place, as flat columns. On the prefilled run (Beijing, 10 attractions, 11 Oct 2026), 86 of the 88 data fields were filled on at least half of the rows: ticket price and free-entry flag, a season-by-season opening schedule, rating, positive, neutral and negative review counts, traveler questions and posts, coordinates with their datum, district, city and country code, the nearest metro station and its distance, sub-attractions with visitor counts, nearby hotels with their lowest price, tickets and tours on sale. Deeper in a city's list, fewer places sell tickets: on 20 Beijing attractions, 73 fields were filled on at least half of the rows. The other Mafengwo place scraper on the Store declares 74 output fields, many of them packed into nested objects.
• Names, Mafengwo links or place IDs, in the same run. Type a destination or a place name, paste place and destination links from the website or the mobile site, or list place IDs. In our test one run read the Yellow Crane Tower by link, the Louvre by ID and six Wuhan restaurants from a pasted restaurant list: 8 rows in 13 seconds. The other Mafengwo place scraper takes links and names, not IDs.
• Type the city in English. Beijing, Paris, Tokyo and Xi'an resolve to 北京, 巴黎, 东京 and 西安 on their own, so you do not need to know the Chinese name of a destination to read it. One run on Paris and Tokyo, attractions and shopping, returned 20 places in 43 seconds, with the English name next to the Chinese one wherever Mafengwo has it.

What data can you extract from Mafengwo?

Every row has 88 data fields, flat, grouped the way you read a place: who it is, what it offers, what it costs, what travelers think, where it is, what is around it. Here is what the groups hold, counted on the real output.

• Identity (13 fields): the stable id, the website and mobile links, the Chinese name and the English name Mafengwo gives (Temple of Heaven, Louvre Museum), the place type in English and in Chinese, Mafengwo's sub-types (tags), its badges (highlights: 5A景区, 世界遗产, 必游TOP8), the themes it is filed under, China's official A-level when it has one, and its rank in the destination's list.
• Practical information (19 fields): the full description, Mafengwo's one-line reason to go, the opening hours as written and as a structured schedule (season, days, hours, last entry, closed days), opening notes, the ticket summary, a free-entry flag, the adult ticket price, the discounted price, the currency, who enters free, who gets a discount, ticket notes, the booking page, how to get there, how long to allow, the phone number, the address and any notice the place posts.
• What travelers think (17 fields): the rating out of 5, the number of reviews, how many have photos, how many are positive, neutral and negative, the share of positive reviews, the featured reviews, how many travel notes mention the place, how many questions travelers asked, how many photo posts and photos they shared, how many ticket types and tours are on sale, and the lowest ticket, tour and nearby hotel prices.
• Place and time (21 fields): latitude and longitude with the datum they use, the destination's ID, Chinese name, English name and link, district, city, province, country, ISO country code, continent, the region path, whether the place is in mainland China, the nearest metro or train station with its distance in metres, when Mafengwo last updated the place, the date of its latest review and of its latest traveler post.
• Media (4 fields): the cover image, the gallery images at full size, the video, and the link to the place's photo album.
• Related lists (14 fields): sub-attractions inside the place with how many travelers have been there, nearby attractions and stations with coordinates and distance, nearby restaurants, shops and hotels with their review counts and hotel prices, tickets and tours on sale with prices, sample reviews with rating, likes and photos, top traveler questions with their answer, recent traveler posts, travel guides, who created the place on Mafengwo and how many travelers edited it.

A few facts that help you use the data:

• id and url are permanent: the same place keeps the same ID on Mafengwo. searchQuery keeps the name, link or ID that produced the row.
• Dates are RFC 3339 in UTC. updatedAt and the review and post dates are days as Mafengwo prints them.
• Mafengwo maps mainland China with the GCJ-02 datum and the rest of the world with WGS-84; coordinateSystem tells you which one each row uses, so you convert only what needs converting.
• Image links point to the originals on Mafengwo's image servers. videoUrl is a streaming playlist (.m3u8); keep the place url if you need a link that never changes.
• Ticket prices are in the currency Mafengwo writes (ticketCurrency: CNY, EUR, JPY...). A free place has ticketPrice 0 and isFree true. Tour and hotel prices are the "from" prices Mafengwo shows, in CNY.
• Texts stay in Chinese as Mafengwo writes them, ready for your translation step. Numbers, codes and the English names are language-neutral.

FAQ

What is Mafengwo? Mafengwo (马蜂窝, "hornet's nest") is one of China's largest travel-guide communities, often described as a Chinese TripAdvisor: travelers share reviews, travel notes, questions and photos about places in China and abroad (the Temple of Heaven alone has 4,988 reviews and 55,636 photos). It is where Chinese travelers check what a sight costs, when it opens and whether it is worth the queue.

Do I need a Mafengwo account? No. The actor reads Mafengwo's public pages. No login, no API key, nothing to install.

What can I type in Destinations or places? A destination in English, pinyin or Chinese (Beijing, Paris, 成都) returns its places in Mafengwo's ranking. A place name, best in Chinese (黄鹤楼, 故宫), returns that place. If nothing matches, the log says so and the run moves on to your other entries.

How many places can I get per destination? Mafengwo ranks up to 300 attractions, 100 restaurants, 400 shopping places and 400 entertainment venues per destination. Pick several place types to read more than one list; maxItems is shared evenly between your destinations and place types.

Is the data in English? Names come in Chinese with Mafengwo's English name when it has one (nameEn, destinationNameEn, hotel names). Types, country codes, coordinates, prices and counts are language-neutral. Descriptions, reviews and tips stay in Chinese, as travelers wrote them, so you can translate them with the tool you trust.

How fresh is the data? Every run reads Mafengwo live; nothing is cached. updatedAt says when Mafengwo last edited the place, and latestPostAt when a traveler last posted about it.

Why do some places have no tickets or tours? Mafengwo only shows tickets and tours for places that sell them. Streets, squares, free museums and many restaurants have none, so those columns stay empty and isFree is true when the place is free to enter. On Beijing's 20 best-ranked attractions, 8 had tickets on sale.

Why is latestReviewAt years old? Mafengwo's star-rated reviews mostly date from before 2020; travelers now share short photo posts instead. The rating and the review split are still Mafengwo's own figures, and postsCount, recentPosts and latestPostAt show the recent activity.

Which coordinates do I get? Latitude and longitude as Mafengwo stores them: GCJ-02 in mainland China (the datum Chinese maps use) and WGS-84 elsewhere. coordinateSystem says which one applies to each row.

Can I mix destinations, links and IDs? Yes. Every entry is read in the same run, and a place reached twice appears once. Places asked by link or ID are read first, then destinations share what is left of maxItems.

Some names end with 暂不开放. What does it mean? "Temporarily closed": Mafengwo adds it to the name of places that are shut for now (for renovation, for example). The row is still complete, so you can filter those places out by name.

What does rankInDestination mean? The place's position in the destination's list on Mafengwo, 1 being the first place Mafengwo shows travelers. It is set for places read from a destination, not for places asked by link or ID.
